Cruise says Holmes is a Scientologist

sorry if this has been posted before

Cruise says Holmes is a Scientologist

Fri Apr 14, 8:11 AM ET

Actor Tom Cruise says his Catholic-born fiancee, actress Katie Holmes, has joined him as a follower of the Church of Scientology but insists that doesn't mean she can't make noise when she gives birth to their child.

Cruise, 43, addressed questions about the religious faith of his pregnant bride-to-be, the child they are expecting and Scientology's practice of "silent birth" in an ABC News television interview set for broadcast on Friday.

Excerpts from the interview, conducted by Diane Sawyer, were released by the Walt Disney Co.-owned network as part of a publicity blitz linking the impending birth of Cruise's first biological child with his upcoming film, "Mission: Impossible: III."

Cruise suggested Scientology's doctrine of "silent birth," emphasizing a calm, quiet atmosphere in the delivery room, free from screaming and shouts of "push!," was misunderstood and exaggerated by the media.

"It's basically just respecting the mother, you know, and helping to be quiet. (But) not the mother. The mother makes as much noise ... you know, she's going through it. She does what she's gotta do, OK?"

Contrary to perceptions that Scientology frowns on giving painkillers to women in labor, Cruise added: "We're there, you know, with doctors. ... Whatever the woman wants. ... If she needs an epidural, she's gonna get her epidural."

He denied a tabloid report that he had bought an adult pacifier to muffle the moans of his 27-year-old fiancee.

Asked whether their baby would be given a Catholic baptism, Cruise said, "No," then added: "I mean you can be Catholic and be a Scientologist. You can be Jewish and be a Scientologist. But we're just Scientologists."

"Katie, too?" Sawyer asked.

"Katie, too," he replied.

It was the first public acknowledgment from the couple that Holmes has joined Cruise, one of Scientology's most prominent adherents, in embracing a faith founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

Cruise denied media accounts of tension with Holmes' parents, who are devout Catholics, over her association with Scientology. "They're OK with her being a Scientologist since they're Catholic?" Sawyer asked, to which Cruise answered, "Absolutely, yes."

The couple have yet to set a wedding date, but Cruise said in a separate interview with CQ magazine that they were looking to tie the knot sometime in late summer and early fall.

The baby will be the first for Holmes, who starred in the TV show "Dawson's Creek." Cruise has two older children, 13-year-old daughter Isabella and 11-year-old son Connor, whom he adopted with actress Nicole Kidman before their marriage ended in divorce in 2001.

How can anyone believe the crap that Scientologists put onto the table?

Their religion is one of the most bizarre. And along with Mormons, they freak me out

I'm just amazed people are willing to put up with 'teachings' such as having mothers remain completely silent during birth to having had some sort of relationship with aliens from way outta space

Though I admit I don't have evidence to discredit Scientology, it's still way too insane to take seriously.

Btw, I don't feel much sympathy for Katie. She's an adult and has made her choice. What she decides to do with it is up to her.

What I don't understand is why people are so obsessed with what other people worship. As long as they don't hurt you, why the f should it matter that their religion is weird or psychopath or anything? Another thing that totally confounds me is why everyone is so willing to believe every single gossip that is bandid(?) around about Cruise and his girlfriend. The other morning, I was listening to this DJ on the radio and he said he wanted to announce this "news" that I don't remember now about the couple. His colleague immediately interjected saying that he checked the story and it isn't true. The first DJ replied that he doesn't care about the authenticity of the story and went on telling the "news". I turned off my radio.

I find Katie being a scientologist far more easy to stomach than any second of her character on Dawson's Creek.

can't they just have their stupid baby and leave us alone ?

This can't last. This misery can't last. I must remember that and try to control myself. Nothing lasts really. Neither happiness nor despair. Not even life lasts very long. There'll come a time in the future when I shan't mind about this anymore, when I can look back and say quite peacefully and cheerfully how silly I was. No, no, I don't want that time to come ever. I want to remember every minute, always, always to the end of my days.

What is it with Scientologist going after the Catholics and trying to convert them?
Nicole at least had the mental capacity to understand that Scientology wasn't for her or her children.
They can have Katie. She doesn't bring the best light to Catholicism as it is.
It's a fair trade.

Come on, it's the media! They're the next most opportunistic liars, right after politicians and celebrities.

Did anyone see Tom Cruise on Dateline last night, and how he avoided/laughed off nearly all the questions regarding Scientology? I'd be suspicious of any religion that keeps their beliefs secret.
