Well, your vet and people who have done it before with cat and dog can tell you best, but I've done it with two animals of the same type (ferrets).
The one who has lived there before has top priority; this will be your cat
. That's because your cat cannot be expected to adapt to the change in her territory as much, and this will all be new for the dog so adapting to what's easiest for the cat will be just as easy for the dog as anything else.
So your new dog should start out confined first to one room - this can be "his room" and the cat doesn't go in this one room only - this is the only change of territory for the cat.
The dog is allowed supervised in the other rooms for some periods of time with your cat there, and you watching, maybe for 30 minutes twice a day. Of course take the dog out on walks and to run outside too.
After the cat gets used to this (about a week?) then extend the dog's time in the cat's territory a bit - maybe two one-hour periods. But the dog should always go back to "his room" most of the time so the cat can enjoy things " they way they were" for most of the time. Let them get used to this.
Gradually increase it, always keeping in mind that the cat is number one and dog is number two and handle any incidents with that priority in mind.
