Help needed from Melbournians

Hi guys

I've decided to go to the Australian Open next month and need some suggestions on which hotel I should stay at. I want a hotel that is near Melbourne Park coz I don't wanna spend a fortune on taxis. And something relatively cheap; I'm on a budget and there's no point staying somewhere too flash since I'll be at the tennis most of the time. I have absolutely NO idea and I'm sure you guys can help me out.

Any other non-Melbournians going to the Aussie Open this year? Where are you staying?

Thanks!

First thought is the "Beverly Crest" in StKilda (If it's still standing)....otherwise look at Richmond....depends on your'e budget...Northern Sub's (10 min train ride to Northcote) is very affordable. There are also backpackers right in the city that have a great rep. Tell me how much you want to spend per night (Aussie Dollars) and I can help Past Richmond (and I mean a 15 min walk, you will be paying 400% more)

****** Dasha Sam, Jarka, Casey, Serena , then the guys with nice asses on the ATP, followed by other Aussies, bit of a gap...then Venus.....bit of a bum scratch...then will watch Lisiki or Radwanksa...gap...everyone else (or sleep) ******Pending membership for the Ash Barty Return Band Wagon*****

whoa? $140 a night... and btw, public transport is very good in Melbourne. It's easy to get to the tennis on public transport. And it's not that expensive!

http://www.bookings.nl/index.en.html is a pretty good page if you can book by creditcard...I used it for my travels around Europe (they do have hotels in Australia too). Or you could try www.wotif.com.au (it usually has the specials on it, but it can give you an idea maybe what hotels to look for elsewhere... )

There are loads of backpackers places in the city that are within your budget. Its very easy to take the public transport to Melbourne Park, so a taxi is not necessary. You can get free trams from the city to Melbourne Park if you have an AO ticket.

Thanks guys.

That wotif.com.au website is great. $140 a night seems enough to get a nice place to stay. I thought it would cost more. I'll have a better look at the website tomorrow.

Public transport sounds like a cheaper option. Only thing I'm worried about is getting lost. I'm not too familiar with Melbourne and I'm going alone. I guess I can always ask. I'll be one of those annoying tourists that ask stupid questions.

Does anyone know what the closest hotel(s) is to Melbourne Park?

Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know I'm all set to go. Booked my flight and accommodation today. I'll be staying at the Travelodge Hotel Southbank which is very close to Melbourne Park. I ended up spending $760 for 5 nights ($152/night). It's slightly over my budget but it will be very convenient plus it's near the city. There were heaps of cheaper options but they were further away and there were less facilities. Can't wait to go now. Anyone stayed at the Travelodge Hotel before? What did you think of it?

Thanks for all ur help!

Haven't stayed at travelodge but if it's on Southbank, then it's really close to the tennis anyway...and you can just walk to Flinder st. and catch the tram for free (if you have a tennis ticket already).

Yep, bought my tickets online last night, just have to pick them up. Do I just show my ticket to someone on the tram? And how will I know which tram to catch?

Also, how early should I get to Melbourne Park? On the first day, I've got tickets for Vodafone Arena (reserved seating area) during the day session. How early should I get there? 10-ish, 9:30-sh? Then on some days, I have tickets for the night sessions. What time should I go then?

Well, it won't really matter what time you arrive their. I'd suggest half an hour before the first match earliest. They tend to keep you queuing for quite a long time.

Btw, are you going by yourself? You'll be very lonely
