going from US to Canada...

Do you need a passport or anything special? Or can I just drive right through? I took a roadtrip there when I was little but I don't remember what credentials, if any, we needed. Thanks!

Currently just a photo id. There's legislation that later this summer a passport will be needed for any travel including Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, etc.

Your vehicle will probably get searched, and make sure to claim your goods on the way back through. Those customs agents can be quite picky sometimes. I had my cigarettes confiscated cuz I forgot to tell them I had them. :retard:

Thanks! I remember those customs agents because I was like 10 and remember feeling like we were being searched for having done something really illegal lol

Since when? I have crossed the border a thousand times and have never needed a passport.

When last I flew to Dallas, i did not need one. And that was June 2004. I cleared US customs at Toronto. It was easy!

I didn't need one and we just drove right over from Detroit to Windsor. They searched our cars, but we didn't need a passport. We had to tell them why we were going over to Canada and why we were returning, but that is it.

I go to the US every summer and have never had a passport. Photo ID and a birth certificate did it just fine. However, by next year I'll probably need a passport to do it.

Here is an update that I received from my friend that sells Cruises:

=================

I'm sending this to everyone on my email list, even though some of you don't have bookings. It's good information to know in case you decide to travel starting in 2006.

The State Department announced on Tuesday, as part of their National Security plan, that U.S. citizens will need to carry a U S Passport when traveling to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. This new ruling will take effect December 31,2005.

The passport requirement will also apply to Canadians, Mexicans and citizens of Bermuda who come to the United States.

I encourage you to secure their passports now, and avoid the "rush". U.S. Citizens can apply for passport at post offices, city hall offices and on line for $97.00. The process normally takes about six to eight weeks. Don't wait 'til the last minute, it could jeopardize your trip.

Thank you,

she sent this to me in April 2005

Have fun in Canada!
