Austria withdraws from 2006 eurovision song contest!

Breaking news reached us from Austria. In the Austrian newspaper Kurier, national broadcaster ORF announced that Austria will not be taking part in next year's Eurovision Song Contest in Greece.

Taken from Esctoday!

The decision to withdraw from the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest was taken yesterday and is a consequence of the bad result of Global.Kryner in Kyiv. Global.Kryner did not succeed in qualifying Austria for the final of the contest. With Y así, the band finished 21st in the semifinal.

A first reaction from ORF program director Reinhard Scolik states: "In the beginning we could show Austrian music to the whole of Europe at the Eurovision Song Contest. By now, the event has become an absurd competition in which the Austrian music scene is completely irrelevant."

Esctoday.com has asked the Austrian broadcaster for a more detailed reaction.

I don't think so according to the program director of France 3, it's doubtful ! (France has just withdrawed from ESC junior)

Well its sad cos Austria are for a start one of the fairer and non-biased countrys in Eurovision, and they also put in those hilariously barmy songs which just do take the piss out of the contest.

However they deserrved the result they got last year. YES if your going straight into the final putting in a piss take entry, of middle ages people Yodeling in Spanish is very well, but you cant expect it to cut it against what was a very styrong semi final (in fact id say the semi was more entertaining then the final, certainly more funny and camp).

As for these other countrys which want to pull out Im not sure. France i think are having a paddy cos they havent won in years, and there have been times when they had the best song (like Natasha St Pier) and got nowhere. However although I like the Ortel song its just didnt stand out from the crowd when it came to the night.

And the Junior Eurovisison is just taking the whole thing one step to far...I hope that goes before the actual contest itself.

Well, I think the Eurosong has lost any kind of interest since all these small coutries vote together regardless of the songs quality!

It's a good move from Austria, I hope Western countries all withdraw and create a new contest!

This won't seem to affect it - Italy hasn't participated since 1997 and it hasn't really made a difference.
