The most popular sport in the USA

As I understand, there 4 "big" sports in America: football, baseball, hockey and basketball. But which one is the most popular? Which has the most people playing, whether professionally or not? Which has the highest TV rating? Which one do you like the most?

I'd go with football as the clear #1... The NFL is huge.

Basketball is probably a close second, with an enormous following for college hoops... I don't think as many people watch the NBA as the NFL (at least during the regular season), though, probably due to the season's length.

Hockey and baseball are pretty far behind in popularity, I think, with golf and racing gaining ground.

For the record, my favorite to watch is college basketball, college football, and the NFL... I enjoy hockey as well to a lesser degree, and I hate watching baseball. I would love if soccer became bigger in the U.S. (I played most of my life).

Football is the bug one. Everyone watches the super bowl even if you hate football. I don't really think Hockey is one of the big four sports.

hockey defintely not one of the big 4...I don't think there is a big four. I think there's a big 3

I think in order it's

NFL -National Football League
NBA -National Basketball Association
MLB -Major League Baseball

Everything else pales in comparrison

However, if you count college sports seperately from professional then I think it goes.

NFL
NCAA Basketball
NBA
MLB
NCAA Football

Hockey is so dead in the US... The NHL is so stupid. The sport was already starting to die, and whenever they come back, it will be completely dead in the US.

I think it depends on what part of the country you live in. Football is huge out east, but when I lived in southern California, it was big, but baseball was bigger.

So hockey is not that popular? Interesting, I've always thought it was quite big. Is it because of the whole lockout situation or it had already started before?

And about NCAA - is it really more popular than NBA?
