I say start out cheap to see if you like it and than get more expensive as you go. But there are a ton of music stores downtown

Actually, I still think Rohin should buy you a guitar

What kind of music are you wanting to play?

That affects the kind of guitar you are going to buy (classical acoustic? steel string acoustic? electric?) as well as your lessons. Plus, if you get an electric, you're going to need an amp.

You should get an electric guitar. Fender is usually the most reliable brand, IMO

I would recommend getting an acoustic. You can get a good one (Fender, Yamaha, takamine etc) for 150-200 USD, or a less good one for 100 if you're on a budget.

Many people say lessons are the best way to learn, but I have taught myself using only the internet. There are only two sites you need:

www.guitarnoise.com - articles, lessons, forums, this place is the best

www.ultimate-guitar.com - the largest archive of tab and chord files to learn new songs from

Also it's really useful if you have a friend who plays because they can give you tips and pointers, teach you new things and you will have someone to jam with (very important) when you get comfortable with playing.

Good luck! Oh let me just add: learning guitar was the best decision I ever made!

You dont need a great one to start off with, I think its fine to just get a cheaper one and if you decide to stick with it then later get a good one.
If you are just beginning it doesnt matter what type it is, my brother likes playing punk and hardcore and he started playing on a classical acoustic. Then he later got an Ibanez iceman electric.
