Question about wireless internet

Hypothetically speaking, if my new roomates are picking up somebody elses signal, is it wrong blah for them to be using it? I ask because I think they are cheap bastards and would just as well pay for one. If it's illegal or whatever then I could use that to convince them. Oh, hypothetically of course.

How do you think I'm posting at the moment?

But if it's not okay I don't want to keep doing it. The connection sucks and I want an excuse to get something better.

They're already stealing cable, isn't that enough?

it's wrong to do so... the person who is running the router didn't take the necessary precautions to stop such things from happening.

Technically it's not illegal. Unless you're doing something illegal on the wireless connection. It is wrong though. It's not your fault that the wireless card picks up any signal. They should get it encrypted.

I realize that they can do something to make us not be able to access it... they just apparently don't know what they are doing, because it's been like this for two years, apaprently (before I moved in).

As long as it's not illegal, I guess that kills that part of the argument. I might just hook myself up and they can do whatever. As i said, the connection blows. Oh, and yes, it's wrong

I love how people are blaming the people that actually purchased a wireless router and not setting it up with encryption instead of the person stealing from them.

its low level hacking but hacking nonetheless ... and hacking is illegal.

AT&T and Time Warner took a few offenders to court. only a misdemeanor, but yes it is most definitely illegal.

btw, some service providers don't really give a damn. Qwest is on record as saying if their paying customer doesn't mind its cool with them. if your neighbor's bandwith isn't secure ... they're open to much worse than internet leeches.

That's the right thing to do , Becca.. That's what I am doing too.. My wireless connection is not WEPed either. I don't mind my neighbours using it, as long as my router firewall does not let them into my network and as long as they don't use too much bandwidth. That's what all freedom-loving people should do - fighting fat ISPs.
