Jackson's Ex-Wife Says 'Vultures' Surrounded Him

Jackson's Ex-Wife Says 'Vultures' Surrounded Him

By Dan Whitcomb and Alexandria Sage 24 minutes ago

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (Reuters)-Michael Jackson's ex-wife told jurors on Thursday that the entertainer was surrounded by "opportunistic vultures" out to take advantage of a man she knew privately to be kind, selfless and "generous to a fault."

The testimony by Debbie Rowe, the mother of Jackson's two oldest children, was a setback to prosecutors who had called her as a witness to link the 46-year-old entertainer to an alleged conspiracy to imprison the family of a then-13-year-old boy who accuses him of sexual molestation.

Jackson, 46, faces charges of holding the boy's family at his Neverland estate and bullying them into making a videotaped interview singing his praises in early 2003, just as his public image was unraveling in the wake of a televised documentary in which he defended his practice of sharing his bed with children.

Rowe, who never lived with Jackson but was married to him from 1997 to 1999, also filmed a nine-hour interview as part of Jackson's public relations effort at the time, but she denied her answers were scripted, contrary to the earlier assertion by prosecutors.

Rowe said she had participated in the video after taking a call from Jackson himself and had hoped to restore a relationship with their children, Prince Michael and Paris.

She surrendered her parental rights as part of her divorce from Jackson and at one point was only able to see the children for eight hours every 45 days.

Rowe, who has since sued and recovered her parental rights, said she had not since seen the two children since the interview.

She remains in a court fight with Jackson over visitation rights for her children, but admitted that after so many years, returning to them now as their mother was "complicated."

Jackson has a third child, Prince Michael II, by an unknown mother.

'DIFFERENT MICHAELS'

"I wanted to see my children and possibly get to renew my relationship with Mr. Jackson," said Rowe, who took the witness stand in a dark suit.

But Rowe reserved her anger for Jackson's associates, among them Marc Schaffel, an unindicted co-conspirator in the case against the one-time "King of Pop."

Schaffel, Rowe said, was a liar, who claimed that Jackson owed him a million dollars and who once bragged that he had made $7.5 million from the interview she gave while he was present.

After the interview, she said she had repeatedly called Schaffel to see when she could see her children, but said such a meeting was never arranged.

Jackson, she recalled telling police, was "easily manipulated, especially if he's scared."

"There are different Michaels. There's my Michael," Rowe said tearfully, "and then there's the Michael that everyone else sees."

Jackson, who has pleaded innocent, faces more than 20 years in prison if convicted of all 10 criminal charges against him.

Rowe, who had been expected to be a high-voltage witness for the prosecution, spent only about an hour answering their questions and prosecutors never pressed her to more fully explain what she meant when she said on Wednesday she had lied when she praised Jackson's parenting skills.

Jackson attorney Tom Mesereau first asked Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville to strike Rowe's testimony, arguing she had not testified in the way that prosecutors had said she would.

He later withdrew that motion after completing his cross-examination where Rowe praised Jackson.

At one point, Rowe, who said she had not spoken to Jackson since the 2003 phone call, turned to the entertainer to help answer when describing when she had toured together with him. The unusual exchange, in which Jackson nodded in response, drew an objection from prosecutor Ron Zonen and a rebuke from the judge.

She also appeared upset when reminded by Mesereau that police had taped one of their interviews with her. "You did? You did?" she said turning to prosecutors. "Damn, you guys don't share anything."

Jackson's ex-wife says she lied on TV

By Martin Kasindorf, USA TODAY
SANTA MARIA, Calif. — Michael Jackson's ex-wife and mother of two of his children said at his child-molestation trial Wednesday that she lied in praising him as a father in a televised interview to help him in a 2003 public-relations crisis over sharing his bed with boys.
In dramatic and tearful testimony, prosecution witness Debbie Rowe, 45, said she appeared in a Fox TV broadcast at Jackson's request to rebut a British TV documentary that had sparked a firestorm. On the British program, Jackson said he shares his bed with children non-sexually. ABC aired that show in the USA on Feb. 6, 2003.

Rowe said she'd had no contact with Jackson since she signed divorce papers in October 1999 after three years of marriage. She said that shortly before the British documentary aired, a "very upset" Jackson asked her in a phone call from Europe to help counter "a bad video coming out" that was "full of lies."

She agreed because he promised to reunite her with him and the children, she told prosecutor Ron Zonen.

She first asked Jackson, "Are you OK? Are the children OK?" she said. Then, she said, "I asked if I could see them whenever he settled down." She said, "He said yes."

Zonen asked Rowe if she always told the truth in the interview for Fox. "No," she said. She said she didn't answer honestly when the interviewer asked her if Jackson had good parenting skills with their children. She actually hadn't seen Jackson with the children since October 1999, she said. She did get information from the children's nannies during visits, and "I've seen him with kids all the time I've known him."

Rowe was Jackson's second wife. She was the medical assistant to Jackson's dermatologist when they met. They were married in 1996, the year Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley divorced.

"We never shared a home," Rowe testified Wednesday.

Rowe is the mother of Michael Joe Jr., known as Prince Michael, now 8, and daughter Paris Michael Katherine, now 7. Jackson had a second son, Prince Michael II, now 3, by a surrogate mother whose identity has not been disclosed.

Rowe gave Jackson custody of Prince and Paris in their divorce. For a year, she saw the children for eight hours every 45 days under a visitation agreement. At a court hearing in 2001 she signed away parental rights. She said then, "These are his children. I had the children for him to become a father. Not for me to become a mother." She gave a somewhat different explanation Wednesday. "The environment was very sterile" in her hotel-room meetings with the children and their nannies, she said. "It wasn't a quality relationship."

Rowe won reinstatement of parental rights after Jackson, 46, was arrested in 2003. She's battling him in a Los Angeles court over custody and visitation.

Jackson is charged with molesting a 13-year-old boy at his Neverland Valley Ranch and conspiring to falsely imprison the child and his family to coerce them into taping interviews intended for the Fox "rebuttal" show that aired on Feb. 20, 2003. They gave the interviews too late for the show's deadline. The alleged victim's mother testified at the trial that the family's praise of Jackson was "scripted" and rehearsed, down to every laugh and even to every off-camera moment.

In contrast, Rowe said she insisted on not learning the interview's questions in advance. She said she didn't want anyone to say she was rehearsed. "Michael Jackson knows I can speak my own mind," she said.

Nobody offered her money for her interview, she said. "I was excited to see Michael and the children when all this was over," she said. "I promised that I would always be there for him and the children."

Zonen asked Rowe why she wanted to be reacquainted with Jackson. "He's my friend," she said in a shaky voice. She reached for a tissue and dabbed at her eyes.

Rowe said Jackson asked her to work on the Fox production with his two German business managers and a business partner who are among five unindicted, alleged co-conspirators in the case.

She testified that she wouldn't tape the interview until Jackson and his lawyers agreed to release her from a confidentiality agreement she signed with the divorce settlement. The agreement "said I could not speak with the press, public, anyone, regarding Michael or the children or our lives together," she said.

I can't wait to see who the defense calls. It's said to be quite an "A" list of who's-who as character witnesses.

Man, the prosecution is looking really bad. They should have left well enough alone.
