Theory of "Self Actualization"

So I'm reading about this guy Maslow in my Project Management program. He has a theory called the Theory of need or self actualization. It's a pyramid and It basically say that we start out working just to provide basic needs (air, water, food...etc. ). Once we have that we move on to security, stability and freedom from harm...then love, affection, approval, friends...then accomplishment, respect and apreciation...then lastly Self actualization. You read all the time that a CEO who makes $50 million a year quit to teach school in the inner city...Thats a person who have reached the self actualizatin phase in his life. For years...I wondered about this and reading this just makes it click...aren't we all looking to get to the self actualization phase in our life? I would say that right now I am in the fourth phase of the pyramid...what phase are you?

1. Physiological - Needs, air, food, water, housing, clothing
2. Safety - Security, stability, and freedom from harm
3. Social - Love, affection, approval, friends
4. Esteem - Accomplishment, respect, respect, attention and appreciation
5. Self Actualization - Self-fulfillment, growth and learning

Anyway, I don't think most people go through all those 'phases', and certainly not in that order. Some people ignore 1 for the sake of 2, 3, or 4, and some people go straight for 5. I don't think they're even mutually exclusive (except 1, perhaps).

I think it's incredibly oversimplified. I doubt that order of imporance works for a lot of people. Certainly many on the CEO track seem to have put the social aspect (deep friendship, family) on the back burner while they chase "Esteem" and as someone who works in nonprofit I could introduce you to all kinds of people who've skipped right to the "working in the inner city" or whatever at the expesne of stability and esteem (or what you seem to be saying falls under esteem).

Reason is poor propaganda when opposed by the yammering, unceasing lies of shrewd and evil and self-serving men.

i agree not mutually exclusive and ridiculous to be at one stage to exclusion of all others. heck my mental state can be all over the place, one day im more on levels 4 or 5 the next im more at the lower end LOL

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

I guess I should have stated that it would be based on a person's value system...(not sure if thats the way Maslow feels)...but for me, I buy it for the most part.

Is it alright to still be stuck in phase 1?

i think its modo jumbo from a very limited worldview.

for example, what about those who are monks? certainly, for some, is something that only comes after meditation or working towards enlightenment.

"racism is dead, it died when MLK walked on a bridge and freed the slaves. Now we have a socialist Kenyan president who is not an American and if anyone mentions race they are a reverse racist (while racism is dead, reverse racism is alive and well.) #whattheyteachyouatfox"
