Arrow Fantasia's First Major U.S. Tour to Begin on June 8th as Special Guest for Kem

-- RIAA Platinum Free Yourself Album Scans More Than 1.3 Million

-- Urban Radio supporting 3 tracks - #1 "Truth Is," "Baby Mama," and brand new third single, #1 Most-Added "Free Yourself," produced and co-written by Missy Elliott

NEW YORK, April 25, 2005-- -- Recent TV appearances include co-hosting Soul Train Awards in March and performances on American Idol and Tonight Show with Jay Leno this month; Good Morning America live summer concert series set for July 22nd

J/19 recording artist Fantasia - the American Idol 3 champion whose RIAA platinum debut album, FREE YOURSELF, unleashed its title-tune second single "Free Yourself" as last week's #1 Most-Added song at Urban Mainstream radio (with 45 huge adds) - is about to embark on her first major U.S. tour since the album's release in November. As the special guest of Motown artist Kem, Fantasia will open 3 weeks of dates on June 8th at the Pageant Theatre in St. Louis, wrapping up in Atlanta's Fox Theatre on July 1st.

"Free Yourself," produced and co-written by Missy Elliott (one of three tracks she contributed to the album), was also this week's #2 Most Added at the Urban Adult format, where it picked up 107 adds and jumped 5 points to #19-bullet. The song got a strong boost when Fantasia performed it last week on NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

"Free Yourself" is the follow-up to "Truth Is" (the first single from the album) which shows no signs of letting go at radio after more than 5 months out. The Soulshock & Karlin-produced hit "Truth Is" has held the #1 spot on the Urban Adult chart for 11 consecutive weeks. It also has the most one-week airplay totals ever on an adult record in Billboard and Billboard Monitor history with 1558 spins in the issues dated April 15. The video (directed by Diane Martel) stays in Power rotation at BET and in medium rotation on VH1's Soul Digital Channel.

American Idol audiences are still reeling from Fantasia's triumphant guest return to the show on April 6th, when she performed "I Believe" and "Truth Is" to a standing ovation. (On July 22nd, Fantasia will perform "Free Yourself" and two other songs live, on ABC's Good Morning America summer concert series.) Meanwhile, Urban Mainstream radio is also playing a third track, "Baby Mama" (co-written and produced by Harold Lilly). As a result of all this exposure, FREE YOURSELF rose 5 points to #25 bullet on the Billboard 200 albums chart and jumped 2 points to #7-bullet on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

With Nielsen Soundscan reporting sales of more than 1.3 million copies of FREE YOURSELF, 2005 has been a resoundingly successful year for Fantasia - "the first American Idol to count as a discovery" (San Francisco Chronicle) and "the American Idol champ most likely to become a genuine pop idol" (People). After performing "Truth Is" on BET's Celebration Of Gospel special and on Soul Train both in February, she co-hosted the 19th annual Soul Train Awards gala in March, and performed a medley of "Baby Mama" and "Free Yourself" on the big night. Later that month, Fantasia was named Outstanding New Artist at the 36th annual NAACP Image Awards.

The High Point, North Carolina native and single mother had her name carved into chart record books as the first artist in the history of Billboard's Hot 100 to debut at #1 with her first single, "I Believe" - which went on to become the best selling single of 2004, according to Nielsen Soundscan charts.

I never "got" the whole Fantasia thing. She's a good performer, but not much of a singer to me. If I want to hear good screeching, I'll go see Patti LaBelle!

Fantasia is the only AI winner that is certain to last. She's fit right in with her peers in the R&B game.

I always wonder why people feel the need to say how they don't get something that others clearly do?

Anyway, I wonder how much the tickets will be since she's going to be in Greensboro?

Some people (Selesfan70 included) don't know what real singing is. All they want to hear is the same voice come out of every mouth and be crystal clear and boring.

Have you been talking to my roommate?!? He said the exact same thing to me about not getting what everyone else does!

everybody has a right to their own tastes I just don't get the need to express negative feelings about other's when no one is being negative.

It’s really sad that some people are so color-stricken. The only reason they dislike Fantasia Barrino is because she’s dark-complected.

There's no way she's going to last longer than Kelly Clarkson or even Clay Aiken. Kelly has been a resounding success and Clay has as well. I'm not saying Fantasia hasn't been successful but Kelly and Clay have much more staying power.

Fantasia is the truth. She can sing circles around the AI winners. Did anyone catch her on Jay leno singing Free Yourself? She was amazing and that's why after that performance Free Yourself gained new listeners.

When people want to degrade Fantasia's amazing stage presence and vocal ability the first thing they criticize is her singing style and the squeaky part of her voice. If not that they talk about how she had a baby out of wedlock.

Fantasia even encountered the negativity herself when a white person came up to her and asked for an autograph they told her,"I really didn't want another black person to win AI this time". Unbelievable! I read this interview in Vibe and I was shocked that someone would say that in her face.

Knizzle is right and you are wrong.

For starters, Fantasia started out as a teenager and her style of R&B will stand the test of time and has the ability to have crossover sucess. Right now, you are correct that Kelly and Clay have sold more albums, but they don't have Clive Davis in their corner and you know what he has done for the artists in his stable.

But how fair can you be in judging Fantasia if you don’t care for soulful singing? That’s what it sounds like to me.

If anything starting as a teenager is a negative is largely a precursor to a shorter career aka Tiffany, Brandy, possibly Britney etc. WHat it ultimately comes down to is demographics and Fantasia doesn't appeal to the same wide audience in the United States and globally as Kelly Clarkson or Clay.

That's not the point.

Britney does appeal to a wider audience, but her music is only popluar with teenagers and pre-teens. Same wiht Kelly and Clay; they appeal to a wider audience, but are only popular with a segment of it.

BTW, the following started out as teengers:

Whitney Houston
Mariah Carey
Michael Jackson (actually started out as a pre-teen)

and they had pretty long careers.

BTW, R&B music is more popluar with mainstream (white) audiences outside of North America than in it.
