He didn't even say that the border should be closed. He said "it should not be open the way it is" and it was apparent in context that he was saying security at the border is "lax" in referring to "the way it is". Love Arnie or loathe him, this seems like a beat-up. I guess he did the politically smart thing in apologising, but I don't see what he has to apologise for unless he is wrong on the substantive policy issue about border security being in a "lax situation".
Surely people should stop pointscoring about how he phrased it, and debate the actual policy issue: is he right or is he wrong that border security is too lax? I have no idea what the answer is, and it doesn't concern me personally, but that is the question he raised.
