SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger moved quickly Wednesday to apologize for suggesting that California's border with Mexico should be closed in an effort to solve the nation's illegal immigration problem.

Schwarzenegger said he misspoke in comments to newspaper editors and publishers Tuesday, intending to say the border should be secured. The governor blamed the error on his sometimes flawed use of English -- his second language.

"Yesterday was a total screw-up in the words I used," the governor said at a press conference. "Because instead of closing, I meant securing. I think maybe my English, I need to go back to school and study a little bit."

The contrition seemed to quell the issue at the Capitol. Hispanic lawmakers -- many of whom are also rival Democrats -- said they accepted his apology.

"I don't think the governor identifies himself with that kind of rhetoric," said Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles. "I don't know why he said it but I'm very pleased he has totally removed himself from those folks who espouse that kind of hatred."

Nunez's office, however, pointed out that Schwarzenegger said something very similar in a 2003 interview with Fox TV host Bill O'Reilly.

Margita Thompson, Schwarzenegger's spokeswoman, said it was unfortunate Nunez was promoting a "story that has no merit."

She pointed out that Nunez told a reporter only Tuesday that he too may have misspoken about holding up negotiations this summer on the state budget because of a disagreement with the governor on workers' compensation reform.

On Tuesday, before the annual meeting of the Newspaper Association of America in San Francisco, Schwarzenegger said it was "unfair to have all those people coming across, have the borders open the way it is, and have this kind of lax situation."

The Republican governor backed away from those statements Wednesday, saying that while securing the border is an important issue -- he does not want to close it.

"We have a terrific relationship with Mexico," Schwarzenegger said. "I filmed four movies in Mexico, I love to go on vacation to Mexico. We have a great trade agreement with Mexico."

Thompson said that by securing the border, the governor means that existing immigration laws should be better enforced, that there should be better security that people and goods are crossing back and forth properly. (Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Arnie said exactly what he felt, but now backs away when under pressure using broken english as a scapecoat for his remark.

Broken English? And he's lived in the US for how long? If he has trouble with English then perhaps he never should have run for Governor in the first place... But then... Georgey Bush has problems speaking English sometimes...

I'm always disappointed every single time I remember he's governor of my state.

What's wrong with what he said? The borders DO need to be closed to LEGAL IMMIGRANTS only.

He didn't even say that the border should be closed. He said "it should not be open the way it is" and it was apparent in context that he was saying security at the border is "lax" in referring to "the way it is". Love Arnie or loathe him, this seems like a beat-up. I guess he did the politically smart thing in apologising, but I don't see what he has to apologise for unless he is wrong on the substantive policy issue about border security being in a "lax situation".

Surely people should stop pointscoring about how he phrased it, and debate the actual policy issue: is he right or is he wrong that border security is too lax? I have no idea what the answer is, and it doesn't concern me personally, but that is the question he raised.

Yeah, because "securing" our borders will solve all of our problems.

Hehe, may be it does - or that's what someone is lead to believe if one watches the Lou Dobb show on CNN. That guy is freak, he links every single problem with illegal immigrants (or "aliens" as he likes to call them): "Medicare in crisis - how illegal immigrants broke the system?", "Record number of Highschool drop outs - how illegal immigrants are contributing to the problem", "My wife is unfaithful - how she cheated with my gardner who happens to be an ilegal alien", "McDonald's average fast food serving time increased by 20 seconds - How illegal aliens are adding to the delay", "I am fat - Let's blame illegal aliens", etc. I really don't understand why someone so powerful chooses to pick on people that have no status and negligible power.
