question about BT

it's my first time using it (so this is probably a really stupid question lol)

so, i'm downloading a file which (on torrentspy.com) has 5 green bars (i'm assuming that means it is faster to download
i'm working off a dsl modem, but i'm only getting between 0KB/sec and 7KB/sec and the current estimated download time is 11 days (and it's growing )

why does it take so long and is there any way to make it faster?

ugh, why do they all suck????????

Well, I thought BT was "Breakfest Television" a local morning show here in Toronto.

I suppose it depends how up to date the stats on torrentspy.com are. You should be able to check connections - in Torrentstorm you right click on the file and choose Details > Conections. It will also tell you how many seeds and leeches there are. Press the scrape button first though. Also, if you have a firewall, check pygrab.exe isn't blocked.

I'm not really an expert though.

I think the download speed is proportional to the amount you've uploaded so as you upload more your download speed will increase.

It depends on a few things. Such as how much you are uploading, some progs will cut your download speed if you don't upload at least 5k/sec. Also it depends on how many seeders and leechers there are. If there isn't alot of people to take the file from then your download speed will be slow. Also some of your ports might be blocked, the isp try to block certain ports becoz they know thats the ports that are used to transfer files.

uhh maybe you've got the max upload/download speed set too low. Sometimes the client will come with d/l set at 15kbps max which is horrendously slow. Check that and change it to some large number. Else, maybe the tracker is overloaded with too many people downloading at the same time and it keeps kicking you off. You can't really do anything about that. BT speeds can change on a whim so you never really know what you're going to get regardless of how many seeds/peers you have.

1.Check ports in your firewall like someone mentioned above.

2.Make sure to observe the seeder/leecher ratio. If a file has 2 seeders and 105 leechers your download will be slow. Look for files that have an even proportion(or a higher seeder than leecher) because they go much faster.

3. Don't depend on one site for all your torrents. You can find other sites with the same files with maybe more seeders.

4. Start files at night and keep it open overnight (especially if you have DSL/cable modem). The seeds pick up at night because leechers files are finished and they continue to upload meaning more seeders faster download time.

I usually get around 80-120 kb/sec on my dsl, but I'm going to get cablem modem because they say it's faster than DSL.

Good Luck!! Once you get the hang of it you will have no problem.
