Thumbs up Alfre Woodard is joining the cast of the ABC hit "Desperate Housewives."

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Wisteria Lane is getting a little more colorful.

Alfre Woodard is joining the cast of the ABC hit "Desperate Housewives."

Variety reports that Woodard has signed a contract to appear on the show. Her first appearance will be in the final episode of the current season before continuing as a regular this fall.

Variety says she will play a seemingly normal woman who moves into the cul-de-sac with her son.

It is Woodard's first TV gig since her work in the medical drama "St. Elsewhere."

Oh I agree wiht you! Alfre is quirky so she'll fit right in and the houswives better watch because Alfre can act her butt off and will make mince meat of Teri Hatcher's and Eva Longoria's lightweight performances.

Good for Alfre, I will have to check Desperate Housewives out because I don't see what the big rave really is, but I guess that has to do with me being male.

I was listening to one of my fave radio stations this morn, and they announced that Alfre was joining the cast and one guy goes, "That show really needed some color apart from Gabby and Carlos." Then he added sarcastically, "Is she going to play a maid?" And then the girl who was reading the article says, "She will be a single mom who moves into the neighborhood." The guy laughs and says, "Of course, a single mom, because black men don't stick around." It was so on point.

On Wendy's show in the afternoon they were wondering why they couldn't have chosen a sexy, better looking black actress.

I love Alfre! I still remember vividly her performance on "L.A. Law" in the very first episode as a rape victim! I also enjoyed her performance in the "Star Trek: First Contact" movie. And most anything she's ever done has been good.

Maybe she'll play a bisexual woman and she and Eva Longoria can get it on with the gardener joining in! Although I must admit I haven't watched in months. It's just "Sex and The City" repackaged if you ask me, and "Sex and The City" was just about gay men...just had women playing the parts. Trust me!

@ CC, I agree with the single mother angle but more attractive? I guess Felicity Huffman is a supermodel. Nicolette isn't looking so hot either.

Federer Blake Fish Roddick Grosjean Bryans x2

Well, Susan is divorced, Bree is divorcing, Gabrielle is sleeping around...it's not as if they make the black woman the only "single mom" is it? Sometimes I think people really make too much of such things

I don't know what Alfre looks like (although I should, I was a huge fan of St.Elsewhere ) but why does it always have to be sexy good looking actresses to play "ordinary" people? Can't somebody "normal looking" make a credible character?

I didn't want to take it here, but you make some great points. I haven't really saw the show, but I know it's about sexy white women. I wonder why they didn't go for a more "sexy" black actress. Makes me wonder, but Alfre is a great actress and she's pretty so hopefully they don't make her to be the black sidekick with no love life on the show .

I think it's just commentary on the treatment of black people in the TV/Film industry: It is not exclusively like this, where the directors/creators of these shows find it easier to develop characters that play to the stereotypes already in people's heads, but honestly, you rarely get to see characters with substance and multi-dimensions. Or even black characters who depict universal themes and emotions like other races/ethnicities.
