Stupid "Spyware" on my computer - Help!

This thing has really been annoying me. When I was browsing on the internet three days ago, this "Spyware" programme automatically downloaded itself onto my computer without me noticing. And after that, all I see is a red screen on the display that reads:

"DANGER: SPYWARE

Full System Scan Results:
- 3 Spyware infections
- 27 Spyware tracks
- 95 Adult-oriented website tracks
- 3 programs with probable keylogging activity"

Also, I see this icon titled as "Free Pics" on my desktop (and btw some of my other icons are GONE). I tried to remove this "Free pics" crap but it won't let me right-click - how amazing is this?! Whoa... And, there's more, I had a dialer set up in my network connections titled as "TB (something)". I'm seriously pissed off with this. I tried going on 'Add/Remove Programs' but I could not even search for the programme that was infecting my computer. I am seriously fed up and have tried the following, to no avail:

Installing Anti-Spyware Beta on microsoft.com - Each time it scans and then removes the infected files, it still does nothing so my computer does not experience any change AT ALL. What is going on ?

Someone please help me. My computer can't go on like this. I even got it re-formatted just two weeks ago and now i'm having MORE problems. Agh.

Otherwise you'll probably need to go to the registry and try to deleted some of the lines

Using ad-aware SE Professional or Spybot may not be enough. Go to control panel and click on Add/Remove programs. Then look for programs that may be causing problems. But just in case search all your computer file for spyware. In my case a lot of spyware were in folders name 'Winnt' and 'system32'.

I don't know how well the Microsoft product works, but I would suggest two things: first, make sure it's fully updateed, second, run it in "safe mode" The ickware usually launches when you start your computer, which makes it very hard to detect and remove.

You might also try downloading a free program call Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html). It's legit. Again, make sure its definition files are up to day, then restart your computer in safe mode and run it. If you have a lot of crud on there, you might need to run it more than once - restarting each time.

DONT USE INTERNET EXPLORER. its evil. i look at porn site all the time. and that does not happen. why? because i always use Firefox when using surfing. now i am running mac os x but when i was using a windows machine i made IE simply unable to access the net.

why is IE evil? because microsoft WANTS people to be able to install programs on your computer without you knowing it. they call it "easy of use". additionally when microevil finds out about "flaws" they can take at least to 6 months to release an update (instead of the 2-7weeks that other browsers take). so running the security updaes will only deal with flaws that have been known for 6 months or more.

if you use firefox (or really any browser that is not IE or based on IE code) you should be fine.

Now, what you should do is
download zone alarm and block IE from accessing the internet
download spybot and fix the mess IE made
Download firefox, netscape and or opera. and use that from now on.
go to linux.org and apple.com and consider a safe OS.

If yu are still having problems removing it yu could try "system restore". This will reset your system settings to a previous time before the spyware was donwloaded. I did this last night and it worked a treat .

Griffin

This kind of worked - in fact it deleted all the files that I found to be bugging me. However, there was this particular file that has kept coming back despite deleting it (after restart) many many times. My internet explorer sends this warning online that I still have spyware

Good news

As for the last one, you could try looking it up online to see if there are instructions somewhere for killing it. And are you sure it's really IE that's sending you that message? I know some programs are designed to look like IE windows so you'll make the mistake of clicking on them.

Anyway, switch to Mozilla Firefox, or anything but IE, install all the Window's updates available (out of date is better than nothing), run Spybot again, and you should be fine.
