Limiting to bands only?
Radiohead, The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Darkness, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Keane, Green Day, INXS, Metallica, No Doubt, Matchbox 20, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, U2, Placebo, Dave Matthew's Band, Evanescence, The Killers, The Hives, The Libertines, The Cranberries, Counting Crows, Wilco, Kaiser Chiefs, Hot Hot Heat, Doves, Razorchiefs, The Distillers, Queens Of The Stone Age, Rancid, The Kills, Von Bondies, The Wallflowers, Travis, The Vines, The Verve, Starsailor, Franz Ferdinand, Garbage, The Futureheads, Bloc Party, Guns N Roses, Interpol......etc.

Older bands would be The Beach Boys, Blondie, Bread, The Mamas and the Papas, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Chicago, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, Queen, Sex Pistols, Duran Duran, The Beatles....etc.

Those are the names just off the top of my head. As for what 'the people' think? Well, I like all different types of rock music. And all the bands that I've named have different styles. What exactly do you wanna know? Their album sales? The critic's reviews?

Firstly thank you sooo much!
As for what the people think, i guess this is going to sound confusing but I mean like "who to you was the ultimate rock band who made rock'...who had al the components that a rock band needed and what are these componenets...

Thanks so much for the names though, greatly appreciated

Your welcome.

I gotta say that the king of rock n roll would be Elvis. But he was a solo artist. So it may not apply to your question, right?

Then the Beatles came along and made rock much cooler. They were talented songwriters and were trend starters. The 'Beatles' haircut was really hip back in the days.

Then of course the Rolling Stones also added their own flavor to rock, much more sexual comparede to the Beatles. Also had a cool dress style and really catchy songs. Honky Tonk Woman, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Sympathy For The Devil are classic songs.

All the other bands pretty much followed their footsteps.

As to what the components are in order to make a successful rock band....well, I would say:

1. personal style. E.g. David Bowie with his make up and glam rock. Weezer with their geeky style.
2. catchy tunes.
3. being outspoken and brash. Listen to the greatest rock stars talk about taking drugs, all the sex that they have, how great and talented they are....etc.

There are more, but It's all I can only come up right now.

Anytime! Glad I could help.

I'm no expert in rock music. But I do love listening to it.
