How or WHAT is the best way for me to remove SPYWARE off of my computer?

Can someone who is good with computer knowledge help me? I have looked at many sites that cost MONEY to remove SPYWARE. I called DELL had me on hold for over 30 minutes.. I just want to know what is the best ANTIVIRUS for the least amount and what will get this SPYWARE off of my computer/desktop?

Never, ever, click through the "you have spyware" popups. That just leads to my spyware.

Go to http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Download and install Spybot Search and Destroy (it's free, if you're asked to pay for it, you've been jacked).

Get all the updates.

Restart your computer in SAFE MODE (prevents the spyware/malware from starting with your computer - which would prevent the scan from catching it)

Run the scan.

You might want to run the scan a couple of times (always in Safe mode).

I don't have advice on the antivirus software, other than to suggest that whatever you get, make sure you can regularly update the virus definitions - pref. automatically.

Griffin

Spybot Search and Destroy is just wonderful. But, it's still good to have more than one... so I would suggest getting something like Ad-Aware in addition to Spybot. Ad-Aware is hypersensitive though, so be careful.

griffin and NDF are absolutely right about the combo Spybot/Ad-aware. I used to use them exclusively and they got rid of most of my spyware. Unfortunately, I kept having screwy things happen to my computer and began to suspect that some spyware was still getting through--even though Spybot/Ad-aware said I was clean.

Then I discovered Microsoft's Beta Spyware software. I installed it and it found at least 300 more spyware files. Some of them were very dangerous, including browser hijackers, trojans, etc. It's far and away the most effective I've found, and best of all...it's FREE. Caution: if you have a bootleg version of Microsoft, it won't let you download the spyware protection.

Here's the link...

Hope it helps.

In addition to Spybot and Ad-aware, one that really works well is Spy Sweeper from www.webroot.com .

You're welcome, Dawn Marie. I just hope you find something that works. It may just be the skeptic (or paranoid person) in me, but with all of the choices, I really didn't know which company I could trust, i.e. would their protection software be malicious spyware in disguise. I went with Microsoft because it at least appears to be legit and stands to lose a whole lot if it's spyware protection were malicious. I'm sure there are other legit companies out there, but I didn't have time to research.

Spybot is legit, it's been dissected by numerous watchgroups to make sure.

I think that Spydoctor and Spy Sweeper are for-profit... i.e. they cost money.

Microsoft may be "legit" but that doesn't mean they're 100% trustworthy - remember they caused a poo-storm a few years back because they were planning to use their own factory-installed spyware to collect information on users.

But you're right, you need to be careful about what you pick to install. Spybot does appear to be legit.

It may also be helpful to use a browser (like Firefox, and I think? the latest version of IE) that blocks pop-ups, and/or add-on software that kills ads in general (I use Admuncher - I think it cost me about $15, but it was worth it).

This thread set my paranoia gene going, so Ive downloaded Spybot...but Im having trouble going into safe mode...Ive followed the instructions, but I never see the message "please select operating system to start"...and though I press F8 now and again, nothing happens...

Anyone know another way of getting into safe mode, or what Im doing wrong?

Restarting, and just tapping F8 (or whatever you're supposed to hit to get different start-up options) repeatedly as soon as the computer starts coming on again. The time you have to hit that button can be pretty short and it's easy to miss.
