"We believe that this new creative direction will enable the show to be more spontaneous, focus more on the homeowners and designers and create alternative home trades in different cities and on opposite coasts," the network said in a statement.
Davis issued her own reaction in a posting to the show's Website. "I just wanted to take a minute to say good-bye," Davis wrote. "I cannot begin to explain what an incredible journey this show has been for me. I love Trading Spaces so much, and I am very proud of what the cast and crew has brought to you."
The bubbly babe, whose married name is Page, making her, yes, Paige Page, helped spark the show's massive wave of popularity, which has since waned with the network's attempts at spin-off series, plus knockoff shows on TLC and other networks and a merchandise blitz that includes books, videos, home decorating goods and even Trading Spaces dollhouses.
The show's hunky carpenter Ty Pennington, in fact, has been arguably the network's most successful breakout personality, jumping ship to host ABC's ratings-nabbing, Trading Spaces-ish Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Meanwhile, designers Genevieve Gordor and Doug Wilson just got their own TLC spinoff, Town Haul, in which they prettify a whole city (both will continue on Trading Spaces for now), and former designer Verne Yip has been working on an NBC pilot called Design Intervention.
As for Davis's non-TS success, she snagged several TV commercial deals, judged an Iron Chef competition and appeared on Broadway in both Beauty and the Beast and Chicago.
And then there were her more controversial exploits, which created a buzz that the network was unhappy with her.
Last summer, during an appearance at the annual Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (news - web sites) Broadway Bares charity event, Davis ignited a bit of a scandal when she flashed her thong during a striptease dance that was designed to elicit donations from the crowd. Raise cash she did, but the TLC powers that be were said to be less than amused at her What Not to Wear in public moment.
More recently, Davis has been plagued by rumors of an Internet sex tape, allegedly made by a former boyfriend. Davis and TLC have both denied that the Hilton-esque movie exists.
The New York Post's Page Six columnists even suggest that a recent weight gain or a dud of a 'do may have led to Davis' undoing, but TLC insists the decision was made to revamp the show, and that Davis is leaving with their best wishes.
"Paige helped make Trading Spaces a great success for the network, and we wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors," TLC said.
ON the trading spaces board they say paige has a deal with Oprah to do a design show with the dude that's always on for a decorating show for Harpo Productions.
Nate and Paige....now that's a dangerous combination. Oprah really does love Nate if she's developing a show for him. He has a huge following. This is good news for Nate after tragically losing his partner in the tsunami. Go Paige!
