LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Following her breakthrough performance as Ray Charles' courageous mother in Universal Pictures' "Ray," Hollywood newcomer Sharon Warren has signed a talent holding deal with CBS.

Under the pact, the network will cast Warren in a pilot targeted for fall 2005.

Warren was juggling several jobs in Atlanta, including busing tables and doing secretary work, to be able to support her passion for acting. In summer 2002, as she was rehearsing for a show at the local Alliance Theatre, the aspiring actress who had no agent or manager stumbled upon an audition for "Ray" held at an Atlanta hotel. She ended up being the only actress interviewed for the role of Aretha Robinson.

"Sharon had no professional experience in film or TV, but she possessed a huge, burning talent that matched Aretha's intensity," the film's director, Taylor Hackford, writes in the pictorial moviebook "Ray: A Tribute to the Movie, the Music, and the Man."

Warren also received thumbs up from Charles, who, after getting a cut of the movie from Hackford, first wanted to hear the character of his mother.

"After listening to Sharon's performance, he smiled and said, 'Taylor, I'm very happy, I'm very pleased,"' Hackford writes in the book.

The Boston critics voted her best supporting actress (tied with Laura Dern (news) for "We Don't Live Here Anymore"), and Warren's performance is generating strong Oscar buzz.

Good for her!
