NEW YORK - R&B singer Jill Scott says she was raped over 10 years ago by her then-boyfriend.
After dating the unidentified man sporadically since she was 15, Scott says in the January issue of Sister 2 Sister magazine that when she was about 19, she visited him at his apartment.
"I came over there just to be around him `cause I liked him so much. I just wanted to be around him, it didn't matter," Scott, 32, told the magazine. "He attacked me. I mean, I'm down for getting buck wild just like anybody else, but this wasn't that. It was ripping my clothes off, me saying, `Wait! No! Don't! Stop! What are you doing?'"
Scott says that she didn't realize what had occurred until she was recently writing in her journal.
"What's really crazy about all of that is, I remember smiling on the way home thinking he wants me so bad that he had to do what he did. Just crazy. That's what I thought because I loved him and I wanted him to love me back. I know — absolutely ridiculous."
The singer says her reason for discussing it now is to show that while she's famous and successful, it's not all roses.
"I just really wanted people to know, `cause typically the articles that are written about me, they're like, `She's so happy.' Yes, I absolutely am and I feel like I deserve it. I have the right to be. But it wasn't always nice. It wasn't always pretty."
Scott credits her husband of three years, Lyzel Williams, for helping her: "He's a genuine person with a huge heart. And the way he loves me is just ridiculous."
Scott's "Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2" has received three Grammy nominations including R&B album of the year. She previously collaborated with The Roots on the Grammy-winning "You Got Me."
