At the MOBOS, Anita Baker throws hissy fit over Janet Jackson's involvement

JAM'S SWEET PRIZE
Oct 1 2004

Gongs for Jamelia as diva rows
*
SENSATIONAL singer Jamelia was named queen of the MOBOs last night, after scooping three prestigious awards.

The amazed Brummie bagged UK Act of the Year, Best Single, for Thank You, and Best Video, for See It In A Boy's Eyes.

But her wins were almost overshadowed by a row of diva-esque proportions...

Frantic organisers were almost forced to scrap their Lifetime Achievement award last night when winner Anita Baker refused to accept it from Janet Jackson.

The 46-year-old soul diva, whose biggest UK hit is Sweet Love, was anything but sweet when she heard the plans.

"Anita threw a real hissy fit," reveals an insider at the bash, held at the Royal Albert Hall. "She was really angry that Janet was presenting her award.

"The organisers spent ages calming her down. We think she just didn't want to be upstaged. There's also the fact that in the US, Janet is still associated with her 'Nipplegate' blunder at the Super Bowl."

Our source confides: "In the end, the organisers basically told Anita that Janet was the biggest star on the night and if she had a problem with that, she wouldn't get the award at all.

"In the end, Anita gave in and, through gritted teeth, agreed to it."

We won't expect a Baker/ Jackson collaboration any time soon, then! Both divas, however, were upstaged by the real star of the night - Jamelia.

Damn, I didn't know Anita was a bitch. I still love her music though. If this is true I now have a new idea of her because she is very petty for doing something like this.

Go Janet!

I agree with you. If it weren't for the media brining up Nipplegate, I would have forgetten it happened.

Hi Liz friend toThe Experience. That post was actually referring to the shit that Anita's been through not Janet. Anita Baker is a friend to the show and I know she can be a diva. We bonded because Anita's had as many miscarriages as me. She's also a tenacious business woman like me investing in IHOP franchises and properties up in Canada. She was wrong to throw the hissy fit but she's just getting back into the game after 10 years and her album's doing well debuting at #4 on the Billboard charts. The thing is and I don't blame her for it is that she doesn't want her comeback to hurt by any association with Janet. I'm not being greasy either. Have you noticed that Janet hasn't toured yet this year? She was supposed to but we all know why she hasn't.

Anita Baker is much more than just a Diva...she's a real bitch! I witnessed first hand her unprofessional behavior a few years ago when she came to my city for a concert in the park. She was rude to fans and her staff alike. I don't care what type of business woman she is or how many IHOPS she invests in, that doesn't give her the right to abuse others....especially those who are buy her albums and go to her concerts.

Anita can be a diva. I still love her though.
I remember hearing one time when Anita had a concert in Philly.
Patti Labelle came on stage to join her.
Anita was pissed. Again she didn't want to be upstaged and she knew she would be.
I love Anita but a lot of times she's pissed because she's jealous and she can only blame herself.
Maybe if Anita actually used all of her vocal abilities, and tried an all-out jazz album, she wouldn't have to worry about someone like Patti Labelle outperforming her in AC R&B.

Maybe if Anita didn't attempt to bring sex appeal into her videos when she was in her mid-thirties she wouldn't have to be jealous of how Janet has been able to exploit it.
