Anyone heard of "John Legend"

He's an up and coming R&B soul singer signed to Kanye West's production company and Columbia records. A couple of his songs get regular airtime here in the Chicagoland area because of Kanye, but this dude really has talent. His album is dropping in October and his first single's video "Used to Love You" premiers on BET's 106 and Park on Monday. You can check him and the video out here.

I knew I could count on you to post here. We connect on a whole nother level, lol.

Anyway about him, interesting you think his voice is weak. I know what you are trying to say though, but I think his voice is old school, real soulful.

You know we are here *Rocketta points to her eyes*

Anyway, I think his voice is kind of weak in comparrison to the old greats....Sam, Ray, Otis, etc... It's not that I don't think he can sing. I do. I was just comparing him to great old time singers. I wonder how he sounds live. It's probably like Ricky Fante' (whose album I absolutely love) still has a way to go before he sounds great live. Unfortunately that seems to be an issue for all new artists these days.

I read an article on John Legend where he said that he does not care if people think he's arrogant. He also said that like Kayne he expects to sell many records, and he has always suceeded in everything. He graduated college with top honors and expects nothing less with his album release.

I will have to get a listen of his work before I pass judgement. I do like the hooks he sings on Kayne's songs, but I would like to hear his personal stuff. He sure is a big talker so it remains to be seen if he can back it up.

He said on his website that the Vibe article misportrayed him greatly and that he is not arrogant at all. You can find some of his solo joints on WinMX including some that he sings live.

Interesting. The reviews say all the right things about an artist who wants to distinguish himself in the R&B arena. I just hope it's from the heart. Some of these guys who are dubbed "throwbacks to classic soul" seem more like a gimmick more than anything else. I won't judge Mr. Legend until I hear his music in its entirety. I didn't like the one review that said "John is an underground soul brother who prefers to sing over irresistibly bass-heavy hip-hop beats rather than limp neo-soul compositions." Limp neo-soul compositions? Apparently this reviewer has spent too much time listening to Musiq (Soulchild). There are many neo-soul albums with songs that are "irrestibly bass-heavy". Check out the recent works of Angie Stone, Anthony Hamilton and Jill Scott as Exhibit A, B and C.

Actually most of these singers don't even like to be labeled as "neo-soul" they just get thrown in that category.

Yeah man, I downloaded about 6 of his tracks from a show of his at the Knitting Factory. I first heard him when "Use to Love You" was on some Kanye West mixtape. So his video comes out Monday? I'll check it out.

You could see the video now on his website if you want. I can only get one of the knitting factory tracks. Would you be willing to transfer them to me over MSN or something?? I'd appreciate it.
