Yep, that is a HUGE win for Halle...
Add a black woman never having won Best Actress to Sissy already having an Oscar on her mantle...I think Halle has eked herself in front of Sissy.
Russell Crowe's votes came before the big BAFTA blow-up, so it will be tough to tell whether he will be affected by that in the Oscar voting...but I did notice that he received quite tepid applause tonight.
I think Ian McKellen has now established himself as the Best Supporting Actor favorite...he's a bigger name than his prime competition, Jim Broadbent, and he's in a better-liked movie, too.
I'm glad Helen Mirren won, but there is no way she'll beat Jennifer Connelly for the Oscar...lucky for Helen that Jenn was nominated for a LEADING SAG.
Finally, "Gosford Park" winning "best ensemble" (read: best overall acting) suddenly puts it as firm competition to Best Picture faves "A Beautiful Mind" and "Lord of the Rings"...
Remember. The majority of the Academy are ACTORS. Superstar actors (you are automatically offered membership after you receive an Oscar nomination). What they like holds a lot of pull. It's no coincidence that SAG leading winners have followed up with a win at the Oscars 11 out of 14 times.
