US star Martin Sheen leads fight against foie gras

US star Martin Sheen leads fight against foie gras

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - US movie star Martin Sheen (news) has joined a battle to ban the French delicacy of foie gras, calling for its sale and production to be barred in California.

The Golden Globe-winning actor, who plays the American president in the television show "The West Wing," wrote to lawmakers saying the "extreme cruelty" to poultry needed to make the liver product made it undesirable.

"I was shocked to learn from my friends at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) about the extreme cruelty involved in foie gras production," he said in a letter dated Tuesday.

"Terrified ducks and geese have long pipes shoved down their throats - up to three times a day - through which inordinate amounts of food are pumped into their stomachs.

"If such methods were used on dogs and cats, there would surely be multiple counts of felony cruelty-to-animals charges filed," he said in the missive to California Assemblyman Lou Correa.

California's legislature is due to vote next week on whether to support a bill banning foie gras, which is produced by two California-based firms.

The United States in February suspended imports of French meat and poultry products, including foie gras, a delicacy made from duck or goose liver.

European trade chief Pascal Lamy said at the time he regretted the move.

PETA has long run vociferous celebrity-led publicity campaigns against fast-food chains that allegedly condone cruel treatment of animals as well as against the use of furs in fashion.

OK PETA Friends get ready to BAD RAP MY MEET EATING ASS. I love foie gras. I couldnt live without it. You should see how much foie gras is sold around Christmas time in France. when they have open air markets christmastime, every other stand is selling foie gras and that sweet white wine you drink with it. foie gras is excellent. You got people dying and starving and all, one would think they should concentrate their effortso on humans. maybe theres a better way to make birds livers nice and fatty but it aint worth driving up the price of already expensive foie gras to do it.

But Martin.... it tastes so good!

I'm betting Mr Sheen has never chomped into a chunk of white fluffy baguette with a thick lump of foie gras spread across it.

then how can you stomach it? ugh. from how it's described, I envision it to be like opening a package of lard and eating it

It should be obvious, but it's not.

Cause I'm right here in your arms today
With your fingers you can touch me

then find a way to produce foie gras without that "extreme" cruelty.

You don't ban gasoline-based cars just because they pollute the air, which is an exteme crulety to human body? Then leave me my foie gras. Don't forget a bottle of Sauternes.

I don't care how..

He is the worst actor known to man. He needs to spend more time on acting lessons than bitching about foie gras.

At least my twins turned out! Raising children in Hollywood is hard, not there is NO excuse when one son turns out to be a whoremonger, and the other is simply known as Paula Abdul's ex. Really, take care of issues at home because attacking a food!
