"Pity the sad legacy of Barack Obama"

Even The Guardian gets it. Although they are complaining about some silly things, but overall they are on the spot.

What a huge disappointment Obama has been. We had so much hope in 2008.

Our hope and change candidate fell short time and time again. Obama cheerleaders who refused to make him accountable bear some responsibility

That's not "The Guardian gets it" That's an article by Cornel West who's been a harsh (and as in that article often silly) critic of Obama since about 2010. He was one of those that seemed to think Obama should be a president primarily for African-Americans rather than for all Americans.

I'll admit that in many ways I too was disappointed by the meager results of Obama's tenure. But here's the thing - a President is not a king or emperor. By the time Obama got his feet fully wet Congress had a GOP majority and they did one thing - obstruct with extreme prejudice. Yes the ACA isn't nearly liberal enough for my tastes. That, drone strikes and Libya are my biggest gripes.

OTOH his admin pulled the US out of what at the time was widely considered to be the brink of another depression, enacted equal marriage, opened the military to full equality, cut dependence on foreign oil by 50%, boosted Pell grants and made it easier to repay college loans, and a lot more.

Plus Obama himself has been anything but a disappointment. The dignified, powerful, caring and cool way the man displays himself is, and will continue to be, significant.

Re: "Pity the sad legacy of Barack Obama"

no i think if obama was white and did exactly the same things there would not be a president trump

the backlash against obama was race based and trump became the hero of the backlash by questioning the birth certificate situation, so blame obama for being black and not knowing that americans would get angry with him as president

Obama's race has nothing to do with what kind of president he was and the sad legacy he is leaving behind. It is all about serving and following the same despicable special interests, politics and agendas as Hitllary and the Democratic party leadership.
He completely went off the course.

Most didn't. No term limits and he'd most likely have a third term. Much as I support HRC, if she had even half the charisma of Obama she'd have been able to overcome the nefarious crap that gave Drumpf the EC win.

Don't let that OP mislead you. Cornel West (an African-American academic) has criticized Obama throughout. The Guardian has more articles with a balanced look at Obama's tenure than one-sided BS like that article.

Re: "Pity the sad legacy of Barack Obama"

and btw if obama did punish wall street then the republicans would hate it and say he is communist, if he stopped drone attacks they would say that he is helping his islamic terrorist brothers, if he cured aids and world hunger they would say that he is using american resources to fix african problems because he is black and if he killed osama bin laden they would not be happy because obama would need to receive credit

True but bear in mind that Cornel West is anything but a Republican.

i have a feeling his legacy is going to be much better when people look back on it if only because he was sandwiched between george w bush and donald trump, even president rodzilla would look good next to them

obama didnt even get to do anything anyway, there was an extremely hostile congress who were only elected to oppose him ffs

obama "i propose a new tax structure that raises taxes"

tea party "no we will vote that down"

obama "ok so i propose lower taxes instead"

tea party "no we will vote that down too"

obama "ok so i guess taxes will stay the same"

tea party "no we want to propose lower taxes for everyone"

Indeed, what race has got to do with him being an arrogant asshole unable to compromise with anyone?

well if its not race then its something else because trump is a big time arrogant asshole and he seems to get away with it

ripping people off, being a borderline pedophile, sexist, racist and ugly peoplist, there are many more reasons to hate trump but for some reason he is actually liked by some

A key trait is different. He seems to be able to compromise with just about anyone with ease. Obama arrogance resulted in millions of deaths. Trump's arrogance is funny and fairly innocent.

believe it or not people think obama compromised too much, for example the lefties wanted the big public option universal health care but that didnt happen and it was a right wing obamacare

i dont see any compromise from trump, like putting his companies into bankruptcy after he bled them so that he has leverage to rip off his lenders

also he doesnt let anything go without making sure he has a personal response on his twitter so that his followers have an explanation from their hero, this sounds very uncompromising

True, but not the one that you'd ever admit to.
