Anybody here familiar with St Petersburg, Russia?

I may have to go there for work (by myself ).

Just curious:

How nice is it?

How friendly are the people to Americans? What is the general feeling towards Americans?

Do a lot of people speak English over there?

What are some of the caveats/dangers?

I'm nervous about going, but at the same time, it's exciting. I'm trying to learn the Cyrillic alphabet and pronunciation, and some key phrases so that I'm not totally lost.

I know I can get info from various websites, but thought I'd ask some real people here, since I know there are some Russian people and some travellers. As far as websites go, which is the best for info?

Thanks for any info!

I visited about three years ago for a few days. It's a nice city, although we got mugged there on our first day! No, suprisingly few people spoke English compared to other countries I've visited. I think it's a generational thing - perhaps the older generation weren't taught it at school?

Despite our experience, I don't think it is a particularly dangerous city but do be careful to have money and things not in bags/etc that can easily be snatched. Also, I found that the people aren't particularly friendly if they don't know you - asking for directions wasn't well received - but they are perfectly friendly if you meet them in a social context.
