Dido?

Dido was the biggest selling artist of last year, but was she just a fab or is she the saviour of modern music?

Personally I really love 'No Angel' and I think music really needed somone like her to break through. What do the rest of ya think?

She's got a good voice and a few great songs, and in commercial terms will be much more than a fad, but in artistic terms she simply isn't exciting enough - doing nothing that hasn't been done before and better, and it's all a bit coffee-table.

I like "Here With Me" (and not just because it's the "Roswell" theme )

So long, signature...

A breath of fresh air is absolutely right....it is a wonderful CD and still one of my faves. I listen to it at least once a week. A unique talent that I hope, we all hear some more from soon.

Just seen this thread!

Commercially I really think she's punching way above her weight with No Angel. It's not stunning, or brilliant, it's just a really nice album. No problem.

It's amazing how records can take on different qualities with time. As a pop/folk record - which is how I classified it on it's initial release - it's great, but it doesn't force it's presence on you the that a zillion-selling uber-album (that it has become) should. Dido has (imo) better melodies than Beth Orton (though Beth is the better singer), More commercial than Pooka (though nowhere near as weird - ie GOOD).

The songwriting is so simple that's it's almost laughable, but the production manages to hold it together. Vocally Dido is definitely limited (not a problem), but I do think she's gonna carve out a pretty long career - for her songwriting more than anything.

Because she is not a "girl + instrument" I actually thinks this helps her songwriting, and that she'll go on collaborating (I hear she's co-writing for Britney with a writing/production team).

Finally I have to give major props to Dido for bringing the pound home for Britain. Not at all jingoistic, but my constant bugbear is that Britain really doesn't have the female singer-songwriters to match the US. Not ones that sell anyway.

What Kirsty MacColl, Kate Bush, Eliza Carthy, Beth Orton, PJ Harvey, Judy Tzuke couldn't do... she's pretty much gone and done an 'Alanis'.

"Mentally prepare? Why? When you plan something it never works. It's simple: get in, drive car, see what happens."
