I hated the ending of L.A. Confidential, and I think it wrecked the movie. The whole movie was about evil and corruption, and how it takes over everything. Yet, the leads have a happy Hollywood ending. B.S.! The two guys should have died in the shoot out and Kim Basinger's character killed. That was the mood of the movie, and that was the appropriate ending. Think back to Chinatown, same mood, etc., proper ending. I think for this reason, L.A. Confidential will not age as well as Chinatown, though Chinatown was done a whole lot better.
And for film buffs out there who remember Chinatown, the original script had Dunaway doing a little time in jail and then running off to Mexico "in love" with Nicholson and her daughter. Polanski changed the ending. The movie would have been terrible with the original ending, not worthy of its entire story!
