America = USA?

Some days ago I heard Bush talking about America, and I realised when he says America he´s talking about USA. Why do people from USA talk about America as a country, as their own country. :retard:?

As far as I know America is a continent with lots of countries ...

Well in geography in school the teacher wouldnt give anybody a mark if they put "America" as an answer that required the answer U.S.A. They were that harsh .

Geography was never my fav subject at school. But I think it is North America and South America in terms of continents. I might be wrong

Oh gosh, geography is tough. Where does Latin America fit in?

Ok if the USA shouldt be called america, then why do we call the citizens of the USA AMERICANS. We should techinically call Canadians and Mexicans americans to.

It's verbal short hand for 'United States of America'. Your point is well-taken, and people have been making that point for fifty years that I know of. When a Russian diplomat says, 'America did ...." no one thinks he's talking aboit Chile, Venezuela or Canada.

As is the case with most things, it depends on the context. If I were to say, "Turkey is great", for example. You'd have no idea what I mean. If I were to say "Turkey tastes great with dressing". Voila.

I hardly think there's confusion with most educated people when the term "America" is used in the right context.

This also happens with 'England/English' and 'Britain/British' (and vice versa).

We get used to it.

We've had the whole continent discussion before. Basically, we've discovered that the majority of the world has been taught that North and South America are two different continents, while the Spanish speaking world has been taught that America is one continent.

Why refer to the USA as America? Because its people are called Americans, not USAers. And it's not as if people don't know what we refer to when we say America.

Holland is not a country either, still, it's often easier to say Holland than The Netherlands.

Everything you do continues long after you've gone
