How do you deal with a cold?

The last time I felt a cold coming on, I ate a lot of garlic. Yep, it was raw and right from a bulb. I ate four pieces in the first couple of hours as soon as I felt the slightest ache. I followed it up with a couple pieces the next day. To my suprise, the cold was hardly a factor. I had one day that I just felt bad, but it cleared up right after that. The other night, I felt a cold coming on so I've been eating raw garlic again. This time, other than a very mild sore throat and slight headache for the past 2 days, I feel great again. I have heard and read how good garlic is colds, so I gave it a try. I rarely ever take over the counter meds and I have been on antibiotics once in the past 4 years. I always rest and relax when I feel sick. The last thing I do is try to keep the same pace. But I would feel yucky for at least 4 days.

Anyway, other than a slight stomach ache from the garlic (it was a bit spicy, too) I felt great. I love garlic anyway, so it wasn't that bad.

I would recommend raw garlic at the very first signs of a cold. I can feel it (and smell it!) go through my body and it made me feel so much better.

What do you do when you get a cold? What remedies do you swear by?

I take so many decongestants and antihistimines for my allergies a lot of the times the only symptoms I have left from a cold is fatigue and achy joints and for that I just rest...

I can just imagine what your sweat smelled like...

I love garlic too though...

Vitamin C drinks/tablets/effervescent mixes, Echinacea [sic?] drops and Zinc lozenges. Oh and I drink lots of black tea too...but that's only 'cause I'm addicted to the stuff.

I don't go to see doc unless it's something that I can't deal with myself.

I just drink limsip (a lemon(hi-vit C)+paracetamol+decongestant ) and a lot of juice and eat healthily - no greasy food!

Vampires wouldn't touch you when you have a cold then, Keith? If you find garlic helpful, why not use garlic tablets (extracts) instead. Save you some nasty aftertaste and no garlic for cooking!

Thank you.

I experienced one the effect of a sauna just on a day when I was feeling a cold coming... and I never caught it! All that heat was very beneficial! If you have a chance, you might try it

wow - lots of snake oils are used here. just kidding really. I am a believer in medicines. first i get a flue shot every year. Then if i am catching a cold, i buy whatever is the hot cold medicine, the ones where you take one in morn, midday, dinner and sleep. and sometimes the cough syrup. No garlic, though i do drink tea! also going to the gym seems to help too, just a light run.

I work in a Natural Foods shop on Saturday's, and I have found echinacea to be really useful, but you have to take it for one week, then stop for one week. It is quite expensive for the tincture, but is very good at preventing colds.

I never get colds or any illnesses such as soar throats for a number of reasons;

1) I take echinacea, Zinc and Magnesium Tablets, and also an evening primrose oil called Eye-Q.

2) Three years ago, my sister was really really ill, she was basically mental (i know that is not nice to say but she was) she was flying off the handle, she could not behave in school, she was swearing and hitting the teachers and nobody knew why.
So, she had all sorts of tests done on her and none of them showed anything. My Mum was going mental, and she lost so much weight. She was sent to the Priory in London by the Powys health commitee, and there she was given hogh amounts of respiradone, so she was sleeping for 17 hours a day, and when she would wake up, she was eating packets and packets of smarties, and bowls of coco pops. Whilst she was doing this, she was developing severe allergies. Mum finally took her out of the Priory because she was getting worst, she used to come home once a month and sleep all the time, and my family was so upset. in a desperate plee, mum went to the library, and because nobody knew what was wrong with her, she was told that she would be like this all her life and that there was nothing we can do. Mum got so upset about this that we had to cancel our holiday, and she was really depressed. Anyway, she went to the library, and founf a book on allergies, and from this book, she contacted CLaire fretwell, and allegy specialist. So we sent of a urine sample to Claire to see what allergies she had. it turned out she had 105 severe allergies. So there was some light at the end of the tunel now we knew what was wrong with her. So, the reson she had these allergies was that she had such a poor immune system from drinking milk, that she was not able to fight off the alleriges. So, over the last three years, my mother and Claire fretwell have been working on clearing these allergies by giving her hrebal remedies, and building up her immune system, to do this, she had to recieve like 70 tablets a day of vitamins and fish oils etc, so last week after about 3 years, she only has 2 alergires remaining, she is completely normal, and her eye-q went from 52, to 135. She is now in year 10 doing fine, and its all coz of alternative medicine. Any way, back to the reason I never get colds, I have been alergy tested, and I had 30 allergies, so I had to take all these tablets, and my immune system is great now! And I aint been ill for 1.5 years!!!! there, sorry bout the essay, but i was bored.!!!

Women's tennis sucks.

Go Rafa.
