Why did Nelly Furtado's album do so badly?

I got it the other week and I don't understand it...the first seven songs on the album are the best stuff I've heard in the last two years. Literally all of those songs (with the exception of "Try") could be a huge smash.

So what gives? Why did it sell 1/10th of what "Whoa, Nelly" sold? Why is it getting absolutely no radio airtime or play on VH1/MTV?

It's doing well in Germany. I guess Americans have no taste.

Well actually Germans have no taste either, so it's probably just coincidence.

Not commercial enough. She didn't show her nipples, didn't kiss Madonna or anything 'big' like that either, so it doesn't help for the sales. But i agree with you, this album is really good and original.

I dunno if she hurried it because of her pregancy/baby, but I'm sorry, but she sounds horrible this time around.

it's simple great I've heard 2 songs and I love it
She's one of the most original singers and one of the few who do what she wants

Douleur immense
N'aura qu'un aperçu
Du temps

I've stopped wondering about low sales of albums long time ago.
But I agree, her album is great, and should have done much better.

Does she sing in Portuguese this time around?

She is very talented, but I guess the record companies decided she is not commercial enough...
with absolutely no play airtime, videos and promos, her album was destined to have poor sales, but who cares about numbers if the product is good anyway, right ?

I was disappointed with the sales as well.

Nelly and Alicia Keys both had huge success with their first albums. And both of their second albums have sold poorly.

Of course I like Nelly much more than Alicia

As soon as singers start to change the still they were known for record sales go down. Just remember Alanis Morissette, Jewel ...

Nelly's second album is much better quality than the first - She didn't do much promotion though, and that is often a key to success and building early album momentum. In Europe I expect better - 'Try' has done reasonably well and boosted the album back up a bit more, and 'Forca' is going to be a World Cup song which will be great promotion.

"Religion has actually convinced people that there is an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. Any if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But he loves you."

She is doing OK in Europe - "Powerless" was really high in charts. USA seems to be the different story.
