Candidate for "UEFA EURO 2008"
Bosnia and Herzegovina & Croatia
Two neighboring and friendly countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, both now on their way for full integration into a united Europe, have decided to candidate for organization of UEFA EURO 2008. Organization of the international events is the privilege of big and rich countries disposing with infrastructure necessary for staging variety of the events. Nevertheless, in our opinion UEFA should give a chance to the countries in transition as well, in order to enable them to gain opportunities for a quick and efficient accession to the united Europe since in such case there would be available the additional economic investments and efforts. United in football united in Europe - is the motto we are entering with into candidature for UEFA EURO 2008 that is expected to bring to the gloomy and war-destroyed Balkans some new democratic winds, peace, prosperity, belief in human rights and freedoms, co-existence and a world without boundaries. It would be a unique confirmation of importance the football game has in the economic development and affirmation of the newly emerged European countries, prior and after their accession to the European Union. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia are the countries with rich sporting tradition, their athletes having been bounded with friendship and tradition of all kinds ( linguistic, cultural, etc.) for more than 120 years, and for almost 70 years they had been within the same country - ex-Yugoslavia. Achievements of these countries’ athletes can be measured with thousands of gold medals in most various sports, while their talent and exploits are evident especially in football. Here had been born and brought up huge football names: Vladimir Beara, Miroslav Blazevic, Asim Ferhatovic, Bernard Vukas, Ivica Horvat, Safet Sušić, Zvonimir Boban, Vahid Halilhodžić, Branko Zebec.
Over last century in this two countries there had been staged numerous international sport events - 1970 World Championship in Basketball Zagreb and Sarajevo, 1972 World Championship in Table Tennis STENS 1972 in Sarajevo, XVII European Vlatko Markovic Championship in Basketball in 1980,Mediterranean Games Split 1978, 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Davis Cup Sarajevo 1986, Univerzijada (University Students Games) Zagreb 1987, World Championship in Rhythmical Gymnastics, European Championship in Athletics Split 1990, European Chess Championships in 1995, 1999 and 2000. Confidence expressed by UEFA to our two Federations, by entrusting us the organization of a such significant event, would oblige us to make the best possible preparations and create maximum of preconditions for participants and spectators, media and football fans. United in football, united in Europe. Welcome to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia!
