Asian stars race to join the PTT Pattaya Open tennis
This year's US$220,000 PTT Pattaya Open, which is being held at Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya from 7 – 15 February 2009 has attracted the strongest ever line-up of women tennis stars in the tournament's 18 year history and included in the entry list are the majority of Asia's top women tennis stars.
Topping the list are the 5 top twenty players, Vera Zvonareva, and Nadia Petrova of Russia and the 3 teenager sensations who are tipped to reach the top 10 this year, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, Victoria Azarenka from Belarus and Dominika Cibulkova from the Slovak Republic.
Joining them are the cream of Asia women's tennis stars, Shuai Peng from China currently ranked No 40, Chan Yung-Jan from Taiwan ranked No 74, India's Sania Mirza, Japanese icon Kimiko Date Krumm and China's Yan Zi. Thailand are represented by Tamarine Tanasugarn currently ranked No 37 and teenage starlet Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, the current world No 1 junior player. The Asian stars are also accomplished doubles players with Chan Yung-Jan, Yan Zi, and Shuai Peng all ranked inside the top 20 in doubles.
Two Thai youngsters, Peangtarn Plipuech and Nikarat Wateenukit the winner and runner-up of the recently held pre-qualifying tournament have been given wild card spots in the qualifying draw by the tournament organizers.
The tournament 's qualifying rounds are held on the 7- 9 February, with the main draw commencing from 9 February until 15 February.
