Perhaps she should just go for two first serves against certain players. There's not much point in playing it safe on second serve when you know that if you do that the likes of a Sharapova, Serena, Azarenka, Kvitova and Li are going to win the majority of those points. It will result in more DF, but the result of a DF and being a spectator while your opponent's return winners fly by you is the same.

Vs Sharapova specifically it wasn't making much of a difference. She was winning 49% behind her first serve and 48% behind her second serve. I think her first serve is probably too easy to attack for the top players as well.

Pliskova beats compatriot Hradecka 2 & 1 to face Caro. It'll be the first match between the two Karolinas. Pliskova broke into the top 100 recently by winning that tournament in Kuala Lumpur most of us want to forget about. She's a big girl (6'1) and she turns 21 tomorrow.

Madison Brengle: "I'd rather chew on a pinecone than play this match (against Wozniacki)."
Nicole Melichar: "Do you want me to go find you one?"

Pliskova's game is made for Caro to a tee. She should have no problems.

She won KL. Dangerous if Caroline isnt ready. I've seen her play doubles, she's good at the net.
To re-establish herself, she has to get thru these early rounds at big tournaments.

She is very wooden and flat footed though. Caro should have no problem exposing her movement. She has a big serve, but not much to go with it, her groundies won't be big enough to hit through Caro with any consistency whatsoever. Errani was able to heavily expose her earlier in the year, and I would expect Caro to do the same.

Am reluctant to suggest too much strategy for Caroline's game b/c my technical grasp of the sport isn't so great, but what you're saying makes sense,on the surface. My biggest concern would be that an accumulating number of DFs might have an adverse psychological effect on Caroline's confidence

That's true. On the other hand, it may also have a psychological effect on her opponents, and they might take a less offensive position on the court when they know they won't get a fluff ball on her second delivery. But you are right. If it was that easy she would just do it and I'm sure that she has discussed all this and more with team Woz already. The only real solution is to just improve her serve. Easier said than done though.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

Pretty good tournament from Caro in Indian Wells if a bit lucky with Vika's withdrawl.

Of course it's important to back it up in Miami. Lots of players can have a good tournament but a lot less can do it on a consistent basis.

I think Caro might have hit the most drop shots in one tournament that she's ever hit in Indian Wells.

Caro ended in the 2nd round her aceless in Indian Wells streak that had gone back to the 2010 final.

Tough draw for Caro but oh well. Based on the draw she should make it to the 4th round against Li.

Good luck Caro.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

Next opponent is Muguruza, a 19 yo Spainard ranked #73 whom Caro hasn't played before, but I don't think she's to be taken lightly. In the last two weeks she has beaten good players like Jovanovski, Makarova, Rybarikova and Pavlyuchenkova. In Florianopolis she took a set of Venus before losing 5-7 in the decider and she also gave Kerber a pretty tough match in IW, 4 & 5.

Edit: Muguruza had something of a breakthrough in Miami last year where she reached 4R, beating Morita, Zvonareva and Pennetta before losing to Aga.

Madison Brengle: "I'd rather chew on a pinecone than play this match (against Wozniacki)."
Nicole Melichar: "Do you want me to go find you one?"

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

Caro was up a break in set 3 at 2-1 and 3-2 and was broken both times. In set 1 she led 4-1 and lost 6 of the next 7 games.
She has to hold her serve. This was against a total noncontender.
She's going to have opponents drooling to play her

But at least she's still in it. Let's hope for better in the next one.
