Yes, it's mystifying really.

Has Caroline made any statements at all in interviews or articles where she specifically states her objectives in re style of play??

I think that right now Caro struggles with her confidence, too, which is why her game is not working. In the past she had better focus, more stamina, now she seems to be all over the place.Madrid is going to be a challenge, she'll be tested from the word go. Her performance so far during the clay season leaves a lot to be desired so she needs to get it together ASAP.

I was wondering the same thing. Apparently the ATP, at the urging of Nadal and Djkovic, threw a hissy fit and "banned" the tournament from having blue clay this year.

In the recent interview with Cronin in tennis journal she talks about knowing she needs to be more aggressive, and she wants to be more aggressive etc. It was kind of contradictory because she also said she knows someone has to play great tennis to beat her, and if they do it's just too good. But with the number of errors she is making these days, that is not true at all.

It's red clay and they have also imported the same clay that is used at Roland Garros. As the post above suggests, they are under big pressure from Djokovic and especially Nadal to get the clay "right" this year.

I think the draw is friday. The way Caroline played the last few weeks, round 1 is a big deal.

Thank you,but I wonder what Caro means, precisely,by 'just too good'.If she means that someone in GOAT mode--or near it--is just too good, then that's understandable. However,it'd be pretty defeatist if any top player having a decent day were just too good for her.If THAT'S how she thinks, then she truly DOES lack the confidence to beat a Top 5 player unless said player is having a very off day. Were you able to deduce what she meant by that?

Also,if it's true that the ATP or WTA can pressure a tourney to change a surface, then they could certainly ask those same events to respect Shit List,no-picture sanctions

I've been watching the Gimelstob interview again where she talks about spending much more time working on her fitness than she spends time on the tennis court. But she also admits that she has to expand her repertoire and improve her service and her return. How she can work on that in the gym, I don't know. I'm not being cynical and I'm sure that she's a hard worker, but going by those comments it seems logical to think that she doesn't spend that much time on improving those things that she herself admits need improving.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 6

I dont question that she works hard. But the work she's doing is hurting her game, not helping.
What is improving? I see nothing better, and a lot of things worse.
There's only so much work you can do. You can burn out, or get injured from over training.
But players have to train smart and she seems to be going backwards with no light at the end of this tunnel

Who knows what she truly means. Obviously if you take it at face value it's a nonsense right now. Because apparently many players outside the top 60 are continually too good for Caro. It came across as a line to sort of defend her decline, but in reality doesn't come across very well. As a whole though I did think the bits from Caro did come across as disappointing. She talked about waiting for her time to come because some players won't be around forever (obviously Serena), and she thinks eventually her time will come in grand slams, it doesn't necessarily have to be this year.

Even though the final decision came from ATP as a board. It was effectively forced by player power. Could you imagine a Masters 1000 in Madrid without Rafael Nadal (and Novak Djokovic to a lesser extent), the uproar it would cause. If Nadal says he isn't coming unless red clay is used, they're left with no choice.
