Re: Multi sports thread

Been away from here for a bit. But I was so delighted when Murray won Wimbledon. Didn't see the match but from what I've seen it was the way he returned Raonic's serve that was key. And returning that 2nd fastest serve ever at Wimbledon of 147mph and winning that point when against someone else it would have been an Ace.

I was really pleased when Lendl was back as coach.

I believe Raonic will be a great champion. He doesn't cease to improve and I totally enjoy the way he takes the net more and more. It made for an entertaining match.

Re: Multi sports thread

So pleased for Murray winning Gold again this time against a very good Del Petro.

And what an atmosphere. Like a football match with the chanting, singing, cheering, wearing the football-like tee shirts even a bit of booing and so much noise. Crowd were really noisy when Del Potro won a point - most supporting ARG. But there were a lot supporting GBR.

Pretty lively. You don't get that on the tour or at the slams.

For the first time there is play with the US Open roof closed tonight!

Re: Multi sports thread

Yesterday at the women's chess olympics in Baku, the Latvian no, 1, Dana Reizniece-Ozola beat the Chinese no.1 and reigning world champion, Hou Yifan. The Latvian is more than 400 Elo points below Hou and her beating the world champion is tennis comparable to no. 400 in the WTA rankings beating Serena Williams! The Latvian is not even a professional chess player but a full time politician and her country's minister of finance, believe it or not!
I'd say that's enough Latvian fairy tales for this month and there's no need for Sevastova to continue the trend against Caro!

That awkward moment when the world champion has just resigned against you!

Madison Brengle: "I'd rather chew on a pinecone than play this match (against Wozniacki)."
Nicole Melichar: "Do you want me to go find you one?"

Re: Multi sports thread

Overall, I don't think today was a big thrill for the spectators on AA.
Kerber - Vinci looked exciting until 5-4, 30-30 but just two points from bagging the set, Vinci completely folded and lost everything from there on.
Monfils - Pouille had big potentia, if Pouille wasn't worn out by five-sets matches. As it was, Monfils was barely tested and straight-setted his compatriot without even facing a BP the whole match.
Sevastova rolled her ankle already in game two against Caro and what would likely have been a comfortable win became a rout instead in barely over an hour.
Few people expected Tsonga to beat Djokovic but he's a fighter and could have made it a challenge for Nole under better circumstances. As it happened, the Frenchman won only five games before a bum knee forced him to retire and the world no. 1 is through to the SF after playing only two complete matches!

Nicole Melichar: "Do you want me to go find you one?"

Re: Multi sports thread

By the very thinnest of margins and after more than 3 hrs struggle, Murray closes out Raonic on his 4th MP (having survived one MP himself) in the London SF; 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(9)!
If Djokovic as expected beats Nishikori in the other SF, the world #1 and 2 will fight it out tomorrow not only for the London title but the YE #1 as well. An epic setup but I wonder how much energy Murray will have left after today's marathon!? (Caro actually finished her NY marathon quicker than this match; 3h26m)
