I haven't honestly noticed, but talk about backing the wrong horse. Hmmm. Maybe they give her the 8th spot no matter what (No, I am not advocating for that).

Well, they must be a bit nervous right now. I don't think anyone would be sceptical enough to expect her early departure at US Open but look what happened. No discounts on tickets for TJ in near future, that's for sure.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 5

I think she should keep all her focus on this tournament. try to win a title in 2012.
Next week she'll be exhausted (bye or not). So try to win this.
Cant think YEC. Think do well here, and give it her best shot after Tokyo, in Beijing

Its been a year and a half since Caroline was in a Tier I final. Over 3 years since she was in a slam final.
Those are the finals top players are in. Right now, she's not in the top 10, and any title is important. Its been over a year for ANY title

I agree, she should focus on this tournament and take home the trophy, it will do her good.

I don't think there's a realistic chance of making a big impact in Tokyo. Unlike all of the top players she'll face she won't be well rested and just to make the final the likes of Li, Kerber, Vika & Radwanska are in her way. Very unlikely..

Jimmie, my good man and I'll incl you Golden .. I am calling bull on this. For God's sake, she's barely been on court. An hour a match .. If that's all it takes to burn her out, she seriously needs to work on her fitness level.

Besides, Caroline always says that she plays better when she's had a few matches under her belt. So doing well here - especially if that would mean actually winning the tournament would be a good thing, both in terms of getting rid of the rust and for getting back into the winner's circle again, which can only be good for her self confidence.

Speaking of which, has anyone else noticed a dropoff in her fitness level this year?

She lost a lot of 3rd sets, and rarely makes deep runs at any tournament.
Coming into this week Caro had lost 10 of her last 22 matches, almost half. She used to go on runs of winning 30 of 33 (or close to that). Not once, a few times.

So this autumn run will tell her fitness. To win here and make the Tokyo final would say she's fit.
But 1st she has a semi to play, and she's only made one final ( also an Intl) in over a year

Imposible to say regarding stamina (and the recent down time), but I thought she looks particularly well toned and trim at this tourney... Much leaner, and meaner, than for a long time, particularly noticeable on the upper body.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 5

Just browsed the live score thread and looked at the stats. I so want to be a positive, optimistic little rosy bunny cheerleader .. but I can't

Plays a good 1st set, only to then become über passive and lose 2nd. How many times have we not see this pattern already? .. I suppose the one positive is, she won a tight 3 setter and didn't crumble like a mental midget at the end of 3rd. We've unfortunately seen this happen way to often lately, so .. a positive *check*.

Looks like she got broken 5 times in the match and managed to break 7 herself. Most of all those breaks in 2nd set.

From the statics, it appears the deciding factor was Makarova's (weak'ish) 2nd serve. Only winning 31% of 2nd serves in total.

It's never always smooth sailing. Either Caro starts well, but then fades in the 2nd set or she starts really poor, but often finds some better play towards the end of a match.

How about combining those two !!!

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 5

Caro is playing versus Jovanovski in Tokyo R1.

If Muguruza had beaten Jovanovski today she could have faced Caro and I would have loved it since they are my two favourite players. I hope they will play against each other some day

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 5

I think this is an important final.
She spent years always holding titles. If she doesnt win this, its not a good sign heading to much bigger tournaments with better fields in Tokyo & Beijing.

It seems from the comments that Caro lost the 2nd set just hoping she'd be given it and got broken twice in succession as a result. But won the 3rd set by taking control herself and won it as opposed to just handed it. The comments at the end from those that watched were they were pretty happy with her play from the comments at the end (but not with her 2nd set loss and the way she lost the 2nd set).

It's only second hand from reading the Live scoring thread - but I feel something like +2.5:1 positive on the happy scale with Caro.
  1. Winning 1st set easily = +0.5
  2. Losing 2nd set when there for the taking - just waiting to be handed it = -1
  3. Winning the 3rd set by taking control (not waiting to be handed it) = +1
  4. She won the match - and that is always good for me. = +1
This is how I feel for her match. And that really is the only think that interests me - what happened in matches played.

As far as how I fell about things like turning any corners and the future - I simply just don't do it - never did. I didn't speculate the future when she had that amazing run of wins. I don't do it now. I'll of course think things like it'll be tougher in the final / next round. But really after a match - my happiness rating is only based on what she did and how she played in her last match and that is good overall.
