Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 5

Caro has a good Kerber-stat: when she plays the German she wins the tournament!

Madison Brengle: "I'd rather chew on a pinecone than play this match (against Wozniacki)."
Nicole Melichar: "Do you want me to go find you one?"

You could call it a routine win, with Woz serving really well when she needed to.

I did find something. I'm not sure if it's quite what you're looking for.

Only once prior to this tournament has Caro made the final (28 finals total) without playing 1 top 50 player let alone 1 top 20 player. That was Memphis in 2009 when she beat #52 Anne Keothavong 6-1 6-0 in the semis
, who was the highest ranked player Caro faced on her her way to the final. She proceeded to get her butt kicked in the final 6-1 6-3 by #14 Victoria Azarenka.

If you'd like me to look under different parameters just let me know which ones to use.

Is this Caroline's 29th final? I think she's 18-10?
If she wins this she can go to Stuttgart with 2 good results in a row.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!

Here's a bad Caro stat: when she plays a German in a Wta singles final she loses (0-2 with a loss to Lisicki in Charleston and Goerges in Stuttgart).

There's a reason why she has reached the SF in this tournament two years in a row now (last year she lost to Safarova in 3 sets). Also, earlier in the year she had a great run in Kuala Lumpur, beating Peng and Jankovic on her way to the final before she retired with heat illness.
For those who have read Én bold ad gangen, Martic will be a familiar name, too. She was Caro's 2R opponent in USO 09. Back then she managed to hang with Caro to 3-1, 15-40 but after she failed to convert her break points she lost faith and didn't have a GP/BP the rest of the match. I wonder if she's still somewhat frail, mentally? If Caro races to an early lead, will Martic give up the ghost again, or has she been doing some growing from 18 to 21?
Why do folks tend to focus on the good result/s a player has as far as an upcoming match goes? Are the bad results not relevant? I'm not asking specifically as far leading into today's match but generally.

They should have played in last year's Copenhagen final as Martic led Safarova 6-1 4-0 in the semis.

Anyway, Caro won 6-3 6-2...the exact same score as their match in Copenhagen 2 years ago.

2012: Caro 17 winners 6 unforced errors, Martic 21 winners 27 unforced errors
2010: Caro 19 winners 20 unforced errors, Martic 14 winners 29 unforced errors

Because there's some forum issue with the avatars apparently.

The final is at 3PM.

Well, that depends on what point you're trying to make, doesn't it? My point was a note of caution, so I pointed out Martic's good results. If I'd wanted to underline Caro being the favorite, I would have focused on Martic's bad results.

Madison Brengle: "I'd rather chew on a pinecone than play this match (against Wozniacki)."
Nicole Melichar: "Do you want me to go find you one?"

I don't think I considered Stosur much of a contender if at all for the 2011 US Open. Stosur was 9th favorite according to the odds that I saw.

I wasn't saying that Stosur was a favorite for the 2011 US Open by making the Toronto final, rather it was a less fluky/out of the blue result than the others.

I dunno. Caro just seems too vulnerable on clay and too prone to being upset. There seem to be a lot more players that can beat her on clay. Not to mention she's only made it past the 3rd round once there.

I still wouldn't be surprised if RG turned out to be her first slam. I don't know, it's just a "anything goes" slam as long as there are no new clay specialists emerging.

True. She could go out in the first round, but she could also win the tournament. And that goes for about a dozen other women as well.
