Re: Womens Tennis in General

When Caro's season finishes, usually my interest in tennis goes dormant until the start of the next year approaches. But this year, I think I'll keep my eye on one more event after Sofia: next week's 125 Challenger in Pune, India.
Donna Vekic will be playing there. She's ranked #114 atm, so with a good result she'll be in the MD for AO age 16½. That would be a little faster than Caro whose first GS MD was FO 2007 but not quite as fast as Paszek.

Speaking of teenagers, the currently youngest player in top 100 is 18 yo Annika Beck from Germany. She may be the next big thing in the German resurgence but I think I echo the thoughts of many when I ask "Who on earth is she?". She has won all of 2 WTA MD matches in 2012 and the WTA site doesn't even have a profile picture of her yet! She has reached her rankings through great ITF results and winning a number of WTA Q-matches.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

I think Donna Vekic is going to be big. Getting to the final at 16 is really a big thing.

I think we'll see Sloane and Laura achieving more next year. I thought that Sloane would be the one to win a first title. I think seeing Heather do it must be a good motivation for her.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Dani got Robbyed 1 & 2 in 65 minutes.
The court is fast with low bounces. It seems to fit Robby well, her slices bounce so low they're hard to dig up.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Pironkova edges Zheng 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). That pretty much kills my hope for a Caro - Zheng SF but it's good for the tournament. Tsveti will probably advance if she wins one of her next two matches and I'd expect the locals to show up in great numbers to support her.

Beck is a solid player, she's a good retriever and a hard worker but I think her potential is somewhat limited. She has a weak serve (even for women's tennis standards) and is prone to getting outhit, Hradecka absolutely killed her in their Luxembourg match, she can be absolutely helpless on court. Much like Dinah Pfizenmaier, she's solid enough to make it into the Top 50-70 but I'll doubt she'll go further.

The most promising German talents are a little younger, both Antonia Lottner and Carina Witthöft have a bigger chance to make it big in my mind. Witthöft will turn 18 early next year, she's narrowly missing out on being eligible for the AO Qualies but watch her next year, her time will come. Lottner is even younger (16) but maybe even more talented, these two are the future of German women's tennis if everything goes to plan.

Funny QF in Taipei, a teenager vs. a fortyish (Mladenovic - Krumm)!

The funniest thing is the amount of points the tournament gives to the winner. The WTA really needs to find some balance in the way they classify their tournaments

Re: Womens Tennis in General

01.11.2012
15:50 Nadia Petrova - Maria Kirilenko
NB 18:15 Caroline Wozniacki - Daniela Hantuchova
NB 20:00 Roberta Vinci - Hsieh Su-Wei

I wonder how the attendance will be without the local girl to draw the crowd? The first match has been rather poorly attended the first two days, which would be a shame today, Petrova - Kirilenko is definitely one of the more interesting matches of the tournament. Not only are they the two highest ranked players in their group (with wins in their first match), they're also doubles partners and just won YEC. Their H2H is 4-4, the last four matches all going the distance with two wins each!

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Petrova beats Kirilenko 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 in 2h48m.
There's a fair chance this group will end in a 3-way tie: Kirilenko beating Zheng tomorrow and a tired Petrova losing to Pironkova.

Wow...Vinci won the 1st 6-1 against Hsieh in 17 minutes 49 seconds.
