Re: Womens Tennis in General

Aga won .. good for her. Cool. and so far, I've seen as much of Caro (flying T.A.) as I have of Errani and Sharapova ..

I am hearing more of Sharapova though. Dear God. It's obscene.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

6-3 Sharapova
6-3, 3-1. It seems all the wins today will go to the higher ranked.
Sharapova wins 3 & 2. All the winners today dropped only 5 games each.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Kvitova has withdrawn from Istanbul with a viral illness! She was my first choice for a potential withdrawal, she has looked in poor health recently.
This indirectly effects Caro because Stosur is now guaranteed at least two matches and will pull farther away in the rankings. And Bartoli is now just one further withdrawal away from playing also, perhaps making it impossible for Caro to get back into top 10 this season.
Anyone else we think might retire?
Sharapova withdrew last year but she had a pre-existing injury. I haven't heard of any problems this year.
Aga's shoulder is still bandaged but she didn't look troubled by it yesterday. And with a win in her first match she has a very good chance of making SF, so I think it has to be REALLY bad before she'd withdraw.
I haven't seen or heard about other injuries. Kerber and Errani's loses yesterday didn't seem to have anything to do with injuries, they were just outplayed.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Well we know Angie was suffering from some foot injury in Asia but she seems fine now.
Let's hope there are no more withdrawls. Though I must admit I'm not following the YEC and I don't really care, I know it's better for Caro if Marion doesn't play but I'm not too bothered with the whole number 10-11 ranking issue.

Anyway, Stosur gets the chance to earn some points but Petra loses quite a bit, if she doesn't do well at Australia she could fall even more.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Serena goes from 1-4 to 5-4 but is broken to love when serving for the set, 5-5.
She also fails to serve it out at 6-5 but wins in TB, 7-6(2). Maybe it'll be a repeat of their AO match where Serena won in two TBs.
Serena wins 7-6, 6-3.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

After being down 2-6 in the TB and surviving 5 SPs, Kerber finally closes the set on her own 5th SP, 7-6(11)! Without a doubt the most exciting set yet this tournament.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

The 1st set of Azarenka-Kerber was one of the best sets I've seen all year.
Kerber's for real. So is Vika. This can go 3 more hours

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Kerber holds a 9 deuce game, 5-4. She can serve herself out of trouble, Vika can't. Will that prove the decisive difference?
Vika survives two MPs, 5-5.
And another TB it is.
7-6(2) Vika. And after 2h15m we have a 3rd set, the first of the tournament.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

The way Vika handles those 2 match points was Hall of Fame level. Tremendous.
Now Kerber is going to have to get her focus back. That is a brutal way to not win

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Vika is hitting three times as many shots inside the baseline (39% to 13%), that says a lot about who's the attacker and who's the defender.
Vika breaks to 5-3 and serves for the match!
Kerber re-breaks, 4-5.
Vika wins 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 in 3h7m, a splendid match!

5-0 to the higher ranked players. Will Sharapova keep it up, she lost her last match against Aga?

Looks like both were thrillers. Sharapova is looking to improve her resume here,I think.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Serena is really in her opponent's head. She has won all her matches in straight sets despite not playing particularly well in any of them, she has simply made her opponents play worse. Ironically, that's exactly what so many bashers used to accuse Caro of doing when she was #1!

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Stosur continues where she left off with her last two Moscow matches: bad first set, better second set.
3-6, 6-2. Will she copy the Ivanovic match or the Caro match in third set?
Stosur copies Vika and loses her match on a DF: 6-3, 2-6, 6-0(!) Errani.
