From an intellectual standpoint, that must be like watching a sissy slapfight between soccer players.Seriously,if Caro overcomes the Slam hurdle,I think that it'll build her confidence even higher than it already is...to the point that she could become almost Evertlike in terms of mental toughness

I hope she overcomes it as soon as possible. But I have the mindset of the Woz: If it doesn't happen this year? Oh well!

Several potential opponents from Caro's quarter will be playing tomorrow: Stosur, Goerges, Kuznetsova, Peer and Martinez Sanchez.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 4

There has been some debate about the new balls used at French Open this year. Here's the opinion of Hanescu, Murray and Federer:

Ringham7 Richard Ingham Evans
Talking balls is going to be talking point after switch from Dunlop to Babolat. Hanescu thinks they are faster & will help big servers

Ringham7 Richard Ingham Evans
Murray says he practised with Babolat in London & feels OK with them. But he wants consistency. Different from Rome & Madrid.

Federer thinks Babolat faster but 'the difference with new balls in match will be big. Spectators don't notice change but we do."

Well, there's no doubt that Murray needs to get some balls for the biggest matches but, fortunately, that's not an issue for Caroline

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 4

Seeing the W/UE stats from yesterday's final gives me yet another opportunity to talk about forced errors!

Code:
                   Wozniacki Peng
Winners 31 48
Unforced errors 35 47
One thing we notice in the stats above, is that Caroline was out-winnered by Peng. Another thing is that Caro hit more unforced errors than winners, while Peng hit more winners than UE's! This last observation sort of suggests that Peng was playing better, or at least that she was more succesful with her shots (relatively speaking). But this is where the W/UE stats are misleading since they don't include forced errors! If winners and unforced errors were the only points in the match, then Peng would have won 83 points in the match, while Caro would have won 78! And Peng would probably have won the match.

We know, however, that Caro won 113 points, and Peng 103 according to the official match stats! This means that Caro must have won 35 "extra" points on good aggressive shots forcing Peng to make errors, while Peng, on the other hand, was only able to force 20 errors from Caro! And this gives us these stats, which much better reflects the actual outcome of the match:

Code:
                       Wozniacki Peng
Aggressive Points won 66 68
Unforced errors 35 47
("Aggressive Points" is "Winners" PLUS "opponent's forced errors").

Notice that Caro produced almost exact the same amounts of points as Peng (66 vs. 68). Yet she made fewer errors, which perhaps explains her succes in this match.

The brief analysis above is inspired by an article on aggressive margin here - a subject I'll perhaps write more about in the stats thread.

Seriously though - yes it is overloaded but I can't see Caro changing it. Well next year I don't see how she can play Charleston even for super-girl with the Wozniacki Open immediatelty after. But even that I am wondering.

But the tournaments this year that she was criticised the most for playing were Charleston and Brussels. And those were the tournament she won.

The thing is - Caro doesn't herself think she's overplaying. She thinks that her schedule last year worked well and there's no reason to change something that worked well. And I'm certain she thinks her schedule this year is working well too. And I'm beginning to think who am I to argue. But all the time she thinks that - she won't reduce it.

It will only be when it is proven not to work well and that will almost certainly be when she gets older and more prone to injuries that she will think otherwise. Until then - good luck to her. And to be fair to her - with all the talk of her being too tired or injured with this schedule - it's the players with their reduced schedules that are getting the most injuries and look more tired than Caro.
The irony of your last sentence is major. Actually, now that I think about it, Caroline's a throwback to how things used to be: Top players playing consistently weekly. Even Monica Seles who before she was stabbed was a major tennis starlet, enjoying the fame and the glamor that comes with being a top player, played the tour on a regular basis. It was the reason why there couldn't be a number one player who doesn't have a Slam: because the Seles and Grafs of the tour won several tournaments a year, making it impossible for anyone to breakthrough.

The whole, "Screw the other tourneys I only care about SLAMS" only really started with the rise of Venus and Serena. Slams were always important but now it's like people just demean the other tourneys just because they aren't majors. And the fact that Venus, Serena, and now probably Kim can just waltz in and win a major with little match play prior to the Slam didn't help things either.

I think now with Caroline on top, there is a stability that hasn't been seen in women's tennis for a long while. Things will be more stable once she wins a major, whether it's the French or another Slam. And when Kim/Venus/Serena do eventually retire, I think the WTA will probably revert back to those days where top players were expected to play the WTA on a regular basis and not just half ass it before Slams.

Ah ok. I didn't watch the match but Matt Cronin said on twitter that it was the Martinez Sanchez 'of 2010' out on the court , which worried me!

You pay attention to what Matt Cronin says?

Anyho, apparently Caro is on court No 1 Monday. There's a whole thread dedicated to this subject in GM .. How empty must your life be to find reason for cheering and likely masturbation over such trivial a thing?
