Wozniacki beats Li in 2 sets at Hong Kong Classic
HONG KONG (AP)—Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki beat Li Na of China 6-4, 6-3 at the Hong Kong Classic exhibition tournament Wednesday to earn her first win of the year.
The 20-year-old Dane broke the Australian Open semifinalist in the eighth game of the first set to lead 5-3. The Chinese veteran broke back, but Wozniacki broke again in the next game.
Li jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Wozniacki won the final six games to claim the match.
Wozniacki lost to two-time U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters in an exhibition in Thailand on Saturday.
Wednesday’s win also marked Wozniacki’s first since she switched rackets— she swapped her old Babolats for a new Yonex this year—but the Dane said she wasn’t superstitious about the tools of her trade.
“If you lose a match, it’s not because of the racket, it’s because of you. You have to think that way,” Wozniacki said. “To be honest, I’m the kind of player that doesn’t depend so much on the racket.”
Wozniacki had five aces Wednesday.
“I was serving pretty well. I tried to get as many returns in the court as possible and that helped me today,” Wozniacki said. “It’s still the beginning of the season. You need to get the match rhythm back. I tried to get my legs moving because that was important and I think I did that much better in the second set.”
Wozniacki used the tenacious defense that has become her trademark to wear down Li in the second set. A high forehand lob on the run in the sixth game forced an errant smash by Li and earned the Dane the break that evened the score at 3-3.
Also at Victoria Park Center Court, Aravane Rezai of France defeated Zhang Ling of Hong Kong 6-3, 6-0.
The field at the Hong Kong Classic also includes seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, American teammate Melanie Oudin and Russian players Vera Zvonareva and Maria Kirilenko.
