Robert Radwanski's interviews thread
I think it's good to have a thread where all interview with Radwanskas' father will be placed.
First one, after US Open:
How did you survive american-canadian tennis marathon?
- It was hard, at least for me and my wife. For Agnieszka and Ula it is normal stuff, they are young. It was our longest journey: six tournaments in row and nearly two months abroad. I counted that this year I spent three months in USA this year, so more time than in Poland. USA is a big country, constant flying, moving from hotel to hotel - it is very strenuous. It's good that New York was at the end.
Was there a chance to see something new?
I was so impressed at fishing in New York. We were fishing from the boad and I managed to catch some big fish. On evening we were visiting... good restaurants. Unfortunately, we still haven't got much free time. In Los angeles we visited transatlantic ship Queen Mary. There was a hotel and restaurant. There was an opportunity to see this big ship inside. In Beverly Hils I was thinking what people, sitting on the main street of Hollywood, were selling. It occured that... addresses of stars. You pay five dollars and get a card with addresses. They are real but they are useless as high walls, hedgehogs are specific for this community. So you are moving at such tunnels and you see nothing outside them.
Agnieszka and Ula still have such tournaments but those most important, grandslams are gone. Would you judge the season?
I think it's still to early. That's true that chances for Aga's participation on YEC are very low but still theoretically they are. There are still really big tournaments in Tokyo and Beijing. If she played very well there, she could earn a lot of points. However she must reach at least semifinal to move in the rankings. It would be good to show up well in Beijing which is a Mandatory Event. It would be a strong accent for the end of the year. Afterwards Linz and Moscow. Ula will also play in small tournament in Seoul in a week. The fact is that Agnieszka can qualify to Dauha with last-ditch.
You said in one interview that girls do not lack of abilities, technic, speed but 'the instinct of killer'. What to do to wake it up on the court?
This is the question. I think we must to work out the biggest automatism of stokes. If you have it, you can play better under pressure. If some stroke is half-baked, it is lost during more difficult moments in the match, at bigger stress. Second stuff is physical preparation. Girls must be stronger. Just look at the players like Pennetta or Stosur. Women's tennis is now going into muscles. We must too. I tried to create such conditions for my daughters to make them 'tennis warriors'. At the end of last year they trained martial arts. I wanted to introduce an element of fight but it's not that easy. Agnieszka is 20 years old, Ula is 19 - they are women, they want to appeal.
2008 year was great for Agnieszka. Two grand slam quarterfinals, three tournaments won, eight place in WTA ranking, qualifying to Masters. Now it's worse...
This season is mediocre but it's not that bad looking at other players. Maybe they were not playing that well but every time they can make a surprise. This is sport, competition is huge. Please notice who wins now? Really good now are the players who attacked from behing - from second, third ten who didn't have a pressure of points. What is to tell Janković, Ivanović or even Dementieva who has her ups and downs. Please don't mention Krajicek or Vaidisova. I don't even now how far they fell in the rankings. Let me mention that Ula is now 60th - she advanced 70 ranks. If she plays well now, she will be TOP50.
Uptill now her head was the biggest weapon of Agnieszka. She won because of technic and head. This year, she had some defeats as she didn't bear the pressure...
Unfortunately, the majority of girls cannot play under pressure. Let me remind the hopeless schedule which forces us to play in particular tournaments. Isia could defend her titles from Thailand and Turkey. In Eastbourne she could defend her trophy only because it was a premier tournament this year. Unfortunately the directors of tournaments demand us to commit a half year earlier. So how can I make a schedule of tournaments, trainings? When you don't play your best they you enter a smaller tournament. Win in such a tournament give you a 'kick', a faith. This year we can't start in such tournaments as Agnieszka was TOP10 last season.
After the defeat in 1R of doubles on US Open Agnieszka said she wouldn't play doubles with Ula anymore...
They forgot it a long time ago. They are sisters, once they hate each other, once they love. Now there will be a break for sure. First common start will be in Australia.
Wojciech Fibak claimed you need a coach from outside, who would give some piece of advice to Agnieszka. What do you think about it?
Next question please.
Agnieszka is the only one from top who doesn't have a contract for clothes and with agency.
We will never sign a contract with agency. We don't want to lose the indepence. Many people blame us for that but we don't need such agency. They are mainly to promote the young tennis players. I mean wild cards and training centres. We have smaller contracts with Mercedes or Longines. There's still some time, important things will happen in Bejing as practically we had a ready contract with big chinese company Erke. In the last moment the Chinese withdrew, we still don't know why.
There are rumours that Ryszard Krauze considers the possibity of comeback to sponsoring tennis.
I heard about it. I think that even if it will happen, his sponsordhip will be not that big as earlier
