Will Amelie Ever Get It Together?

Yes, I know she played her semi-finals match earlier, but couldn’t she have given Justine a little competition? Even at the Hopman Cup, Lindsay made quick work of her. That match should’ve gone three sets. She needs to see a sports shrink.

Maybe if she stops complaining too damn much, she’ll focus more when she’s on court. I think her game is beautiful, but her head is whack.

Amelie is 1-6 against Serena, 1-5 against venus, 2-2 against Justine and 2-7 against Kim. She is also 3-7 against Lindsay. One of these players is bound to make the final of a tier 2 or above tourney. So, no wonder she doesn't "get it together" with her poor record against the top players.

She keeps talking about her game and how much it has improved. And her mental toughness and how much better she is now. The truth is she is just the same

She started coming to the net 2 years ago with great results, but overall her game is not agressive enough. She likes to talk about her different spins and stuff but she hasn't got a clue what to do with them. She isn't very smart on the court IMHO. In Zurich I saw Schnyder easily tear her game apart and Mauresmo kept doing the same things :retard: IT was so obvious what she had to do... And there are a lot more matches she should have won if she played smarter. I think the fact that she's so mentally fragile has something to do with her not being able to think clearly on court.

I like Amelie alot (check my top 10 list) here's my honest judgement. I would
love to see her win a grand slam; but she's too timid. I always felt that AM is
just way too nice to win, and she thinks way too much. I know she's very
articulate off court, reads alot etc... and that's a problem. There's way to
much going on in her head. She should just let it all go, and just get her
herself into a very raw state of just pure ambition/power/drive and win.
Obviously, Justine has learned how to harness all those emotions into this
relentless, driven shark. There's nothing on court for Justine anymore; but
to win, win, win. Amelie isn't like that...again she thinks too much about
everything else in the world, especially about herself. There's too much
self conciousness, and it shows up in matches.

This mental battle with herself does seem to cloud her match strategy. Does
the wrong shots alot, at all the wrong times. Either comes to net at the wrong
times, or stays back for no apparent reason.

I really thought she would beat Justine today. She hits with her alot, knows her
off court. There's no secrets to really hide from Amelie, she knows the
Henin game. Holding serve is really a mental "nerves of steel" skill, Justine
was in her "shark" mode and could, Amelie couldn't break it and lost her
nerve. Again.

I think Amelie can win a grand slam. She's proud of herself, and her game
This is the direction to go in terms of confidence. It's a start. If Goran can
finally win a grand slam, can't see why Amelie can't.

I dont think amelie has what it takes to win a GS. She has the game but just doesnt have the mental side. She wont beat the likes of clijsters, henin, davenport or the williams back-to-back. She puts too much pressure on herself. She talks herself up alot but the results still dont come.

As Greenout says, Goran finally won a slam. Marat got his early. If you're good enough, there's a chance you'll win a slam some time, even with these sorts of problems that Greenout described so well. Amelie is good enough and may well win a slam.

Unfortunately, her problems are such that it's a question of whether she will win "a slam" rather than how many she will win, as with many players with less complex minds, personalities, etc. Then again, if Amelie were different she would not be such an attractive personality, and those of us who love her would probably have a different favourite player.

And, whether she wins a slam or not, she is going to end up with a career that 99 per cent of WTA players can only dream of. Twenty-one finals and ten titles, with many more to come at this rate, plus a likely ranking of #3 soon, is not bad.

I don't think her problem with her head is such a big deal, it's her game that is a problem. She uses a lot of spins and slices and that doesn't work against either the belgians or the Williams. The only person she could cause trouble with that is Serena, but more times that not Serena will hit the ball too hard for Amelie to use an effective slice. She needs to hit the ball, instead of caressing over it. A lot of times it looks like Amelie's balls just float over the net, she won't win a major playing like that.

I'm not a huge Amelie fan, but I do like her game. I hate that she can't seem to get it together between her injuries and her mental state. Right now she isn't even where she was when she made the semis of wimbledon (I thought she played great there, even though Serena or Venus killed her in that match).

I agree; I don't think she is likely to win any major. She has showed some brilliant tennis, mainly when she comes to net. But in the big matches she just looks so over played, she really doesn't hit the ball that hard and seems to mishit a lot. Don't get me wrong, she has a beautiful game, but not one that will be winning any grand slams any time soon.

She's a total head case in the big moments. Kim SMASHING her 6-2 6-0 was probably one of the lowest mement's of her career. Most of it is mental. She can have a brilliant game. But, she needs a sports shrink. :)

Maybe she just isn´t good enough....look at her record against the main contenders: It ain´t pretty. There comes a time when you have to evolve to the next level....that hasn´t happened with Amelie. It seems that she hasn´t really progressed since her splash at the ´99 Oz open.
