SYDNEY, Jan 16 (Reuters) - A shoulder injury forced Lindsay Davenport to withdraw from her semi-final with world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne at the Sydney International on Friday.
Davenport strained a muscle in her right shoulder during her quarter-final win over Elena Dementieva on Thursday before aggravating the problem by playing doubles.
The American told a news conference that it was too painful for her to play against Belgian Henin-Hardenne but she was hopeful of recovering in time for the Australian Open in Melbourne which starts on Monday.
"There's a chance it will heal completely if I give it three or four days' rest," she said.
Davenport's withdrawal gave Henin-Hardenne a free ride into Saturday's final against either Amelie Mauresmo or Francesca Schiavone.
She considered withdrawing from doubles because she suffered the injury during her match with Elena, though she managed to win, but felt she owed it to Corina to play and not withdraw and she didn't think the injury was that serious. Now she knows it is.
I saw this in an article earlier today, but I can't remember where I saw it.
viggen she plays doubles because alot of these girls, are robots. They play, play and still play a full schedule and doubles. It is only messing them up for long term achievments on the tour. I am not surprised at this at all. She played a full Hopman Cup and now Sydney knowing full well she just came back from injury .
Man I just hope that Venus remains healthy before and after Australia.
Wasn't everyone discussing the "ditch the doubles" for Lindsay thing
this week? She should read WTAworld more often and read our coaching
advice!!!!!!!!!!

Lindsay committed to play doubles in Sydney before she got the call to play Hopman Cup. She had already committed to playing with Morariu and didn't want to let her down and leave her out in the cold without a partner. She has admitted if she had got the Hopman callup before she had to commit to Sydney she probably wouldn't have played doubles in Sydney.

Seriously though, cut the crap Dawn. Serena and Venus play a lighter schedule than anyone else on tour and are still injured all the time. Unfortunately injuries are part of the game these days
No Rob I disagree. Venus and Serena do get injured but they will be around alot longer. I know Lindsay did what she felt was best but it was stupid. She just came back from injury and now is already playing doubles and full sets of singles.
I just think that if she didn't play Hopman Cup and Sydney that she would not have hurt her chances at OZ.
Imho Lindsay should not play as much doubles. Same as Kim, she needs to cut dubs out as well.
