I know this is a long shot but who thought Maria S.would give the rusty Venus so much trouble. Plus Ashley might have a little confidence (from reaching her first final) mixed with a "go for everything" attitude. Predictions anyone?

Venus usually has a bit of trouble with players who she has never faced before. I think she will be a bit nervous and rusty for the first set and pull it together in the second set. First round matches usually end up being tougher than 2nd and 3rd round matches.

I like Ashley, but I don't see it. I've been looking at her record. She has wins against three top 20 players- one against Smashnova, one against Meghann (who she's 1-1 against) and 2 against Dani. She was really , really hot on clay and went all the way to the semis at Charleston where Justine beat her. In fact, three of her most impressive wins in a row were against Bovina, Meghann and Daniela. After the end of her clay court season in Vienna (double bageled by Clarissa Fernandez, for pete's sake!) she collapsed: she never put more than one win in a row together for the rest of the year.
she made the Aukland final against not super-impressive competition, but she went out in the first round last weak at Hobart. I don't see Ashley as a threat to Vee, unless Vee is WAY off her game- way, way, WAY off. I just don't see that happening.
When Venus faced Svetlana Kunetsova last year in the first round after a long layoff a whole thread thought Svetlana could win the match.
Ashley is quick on court and probably will make Venus hit more shots than she is used to. But in the long run Venus will play the big points better and go on into the second round.
yeah me too, i was sure she would take a set...anyways, Harkleroad should put a fight and get a lot of balls back, which should definitely help Venus...i think it will be a close first set and then an easier second set...and hopefully Venus will come out very intense and focused and more agressive like she said she would be
I am very excited, i cant believe its just in a few days
Ashley is a Vera Z type player. Doesn't make a lot of mistakes. BUT... This is hardcourt and high bouncing hardcourt so Ash's topspin forehand will sit up for Vee to crush.
On clay, it would be another story(Vee would probably win) but at the OZ Open, no chance for Ash. Vee 6-1, 6-3
I'm a big Ash fan (and not much of a Vee fan)....but Vee will almost certainly take this one in 2 sets. I'm just hoping that Ash can make it a competitive scoreline...something she can take some confidence from.
Um no. Venus will be a little rusty and nervous, but who wouldn't be after being out for sooo long and having been dealt with a loss in the family. Go Vee, I'm 100% supporting you girl!! GO ON AND WIN YOUR FIRST AUSSIE OPEN. Defend it for the Williams family.
