Australian Open Tournament director Paul McNamee admited in a written statement to frequent drug use. While no specific drug was mentioned, the brief statement implied that an illegal narcotic was being used.
The reaction from players was mixed. "I can't say that I'm shocked," said world number seven Anastasia Myskina, "When you make the kind of decisions that he is making about the draws and stuff, you have to be pretty high on something."
Myskina was referring to the decision by McNamee to allow world number two Kim Clijsters the option of withdrawing from the tournament just two minutes before her match.
Also referring to that decision, world number five Lindsay Davenport said, "Yeah, he must have been pretty hammered."
The Australian Tennis Federation had no comment.
