No more doubles Clijsters-Sugiyama!

Says Ai's mother. She is disturbed because Kim is more and more retiring just before a tournament!Ai would now play with the South-African Huber!

L'important, c'est la rose...

Ai's mother should also consider that Ai won 2 slams this year.

I don't think Maggie ever played with Huber regularly.. as far as I know..
they have played quite a few tournaments together but they never made it a rule to play together on a regular basis. So it's no loss for Maggie.
As for Kim and Ai, it's quite understandable that Kim doesn't want to enter doubles in every tournament as she always goes deep in the tournament in singles in the first place and Ai isn't that good in singles. For me, doubles is like a second priority or even less important for most of the players and as one of the top ten players, I think Ai better cut back on doubles in her schedule..

With all the success Ai's had in doubles, I'd doubt she'll disregard her trophies and start concentrating more on singles, especially when you consider that she'll be 29 in 2004.

mmm... strange. They were such a great combo! Besides, Ai played so well in singles this year... so she shouldn't only concentrate on doubles?
Was there a bit of a 'fight' I hope not. Of course "het laatste nieuws" (Belgian 'quality newspaper') made it seem like that

Well, I imagine Ai would've been a bit annoyed with Kim for the number of times she pulled out of their doubles matches, though I don't blame Kim b/c for her, singles is top priority.

Precisely.
I think in a way it's good for Ai to team up with some double specialist like Lizel. If I remember correctly, Huber has retired from singles already so her only priority at the moment is double and that shouldn't bother Ai's schedule or her Mummy. I don't know if Ai should play doubles in every tournament she enters.. I know she loves playing..but doesn't it contradict her saying her tight schedule doesn't allow her to compete in Athen. Looks like she's got so much gus playing singles and doubles in everything even when her regular partner isn't available by replacing her with some other one. Well..maybe it's just me but winning a lot in doubles really doesn't impress me these days as those who are supposed to be great doulbe parters have stopped playing doubles in big events.. there used to be many players who were great at both singles and doubles: Hingis, Sanchez, Novotona, Zvereva, the Willy sisters, Anna K, Davenport..the list goes on and on...

Personally, I reckon Ai should've participated in the Olympics because it's a great honour to have been chosen (in Ai's case, asked) to represent one's own country and also, the event occurs once every four years so in reality, 2004 Athens would most probably be Ai's last chance to play in the Olympics before she retires (unless she does what Nana Miyagi did: retire in singles, but continue playing doubles).

2003 showed everyone that Ai can be extremely successful in both singles and doubles - so I don't see why she should be dropping her doubles schedule anytime soon. It pays well, gives her quite a few trophies and gives her something to lean back on when she doesn't do as well in singles.

Huh? I don't even remember Kim pulling out that much except for the USOpen and those were really special circumstances.

Strange.... Ai said at the YEC that she was agreeing with Kim because she wanted Kim to concentrate on single... She even said that maybe playing so much doubles hampered Kim to win GS
