I love Mriv! I first saw her in Australia as a qualifier in 2000 when as an ametuer and qualifyer she came back from a set to beat Corina M and then in the 2nd round push eventual champion avenport 64 75 on Court 2. The best bit of her game is her mum- a size 4 barbi doll with major plastic surgery who hollers from the side line. She then berates the coach at the end of matches. It6 is actually a little sad- she talks about her daughter to her coaches as if she isn't their. I really thought Mirv (as her mum call's her) would be a top 5-0 playuer easily-she has a lovely serve and really solid from the ground. For the next 3 years she has played really badly in Oz. She had no idea how to play the spin of Serna the next year, especially ni windy conditions. The follwing year against Garbin, she was almost as made- she really struggles generating her own pace. In 03, she had a real chance against Danillidou- she had a bad start but really should have won the 2nd set. Mirv just doesn't seem as fit as she was, maybe a bit slower and had added a bit of weight- don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with that but it has affected her movement.
I was lucky enough to travel to Paris and saw Marissa play an unbeleivably great match against strebotnik. She served beautifully and I really thought she had turned the corner. Funny thing is, mum wasn't their- her coach and boyfriend watched. So I was thinking maybe no mum is a good thing b'c maybe she added too much presure. Unfortunately, her results, on the whole, have not gone as well for the rest of the year.
Every year Marissa has come to OZ she has had a different coach. I think she needs a stable coach. she needs to get fitter. The other thing is motivation. Marisa has attended college-she has done that, her father is a CEO of a major org- so money isn't the cocern- so I don't know, does she really want it or is it like a hobby.
I really really hope she can turn it around-she has the talent she has beaten some really good players-Bartoli, Sanchez Vicario, Corina M-their is no reason, I don't think why she couldn't be a top 50 player
