Marissa Irvin

How do you think she will do next year? How high do you think she'll get in your career? I became fascinated with her when she absolutely DESTROYED Bartoli at New Haven this summer after playing a two-hour match earlier that day! But she seems to lose to players that she shouldn't, and loses her head alot. What do you think?

Marissa's achieved her career high singles ranking of #51 in August of 2002. Though I'd like to see it happen, I doubt she'll ever better that number.

I love Mriv! I first saw her in Australia as a qualifier in 2000 when as an ametuer and qualifyer she came back from a set to beat Corina M and then in the 2nd round push eventual champion avenport 64 75 on Court 2. The best bit of her game is her mum- a size 4 barbi doll with major plastic surgery who hollers from the side line. She then berates the coach at the end of matches. It6 is actually a little sad- she talks about her daughter to her coaches as if she isn't their. I really thought Mirv (as her mum call's her) would be a top 5-0 playuer easily-she has a lovely serve and really solid from the ground. For the next 3 years she has played really badly in Oz. She had no idea how to play the spin of Serna the next year, especially ni windy conditions. The follwing year against Garbin, she was almost as made- she really struggles generating her own pace. In 03, she had a real chance against Danillidou- she had a bad start but really should have won the 2nd set. Mirv just doesn't seem as fit as she was, maybe a bit slower and had added a bit of weight- don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with that but it has affected her movement.
I was lucky enough to travel to Paris and saw Marissa play an unbeleivably great match against strebotnik. She served beautifully and I really thought she had turned the corner. Funny thing is, mum wasn't their- her coach and boyfriend watched. So I was thinking maybe no mum is a good thing b'c maybe she added too much presure. Unfortunately, her results, on the whole, have not gone as well for the rest of the year.
Every year Marissa has come to OZ she has had a different coach. I think she needs a stable coach. she needs to get fitter. The other thing is motivation. Marisa has attended college-she has done that, her father is a CEO of a major org- so money isn't the cocern- so I don't know, does she really want it or is it like a hobby.
I really really hope she can turn it around-she has the talent she has beaten some really good players-Bartoli, Sanchez Vicario, Corina M-their is no reason, I don't think why she couldn't be a top 50 player

she has good serves and groundstrokes but can easily lose her momentum and drift away.

her success has usually been on the hardcourts- she was SOOOOO close to beating hingis in the us open 1st round last year.

if she wants to get better i suggest a new coach and personal trainer- and to perhaps play more??

Marissa is part of an interesting piece of college tennis trivia. She lost in the final (US) match in both '99 and '00. Her Stanford teammate Laura Granville won in both '00 and '01. So the first of Laura's b2b titles consigned Marissa to being a b2b runner-up.

Marissa can be a great player, but IMO she doesn't try.

Marissa Irvin has always been one of my top faves.
Even when she beat Justine I didn't dump her out of my list.
I hope 2004 will finally be her breakthrough year, as she is so much better than her ranking!
Vamos Marissa!

Marissa can be a GREAT player, but she never will be. She lacks the desire, and all the things that come with being a tennis player. She's not the type of player to spend hours on the court in training, or hours off the court for fitness training.

She's just not that type of player.

I'm a Marissa fan, I admit...have been since she was at Stanford. Her biggest problem is her emotions. She needs to stop letting bad line calls and other distractions from bringing her down. If she focuses more and works harder, she should move up to top 30- top 20. She has a great overall game....not any major weapons, but she does have a descent serve and she is pretty comfortable at net.
