This is a interview she gave to Blic- Serbian newspapers-yesterday. Novi Sad is my home. I needed American passport to travel easier around the world, as yugoslavia had sanctions. I love Yugoslavia, i have all my friens there, i've been going incognito there almost every year.
Asked if she still speaks serbian: Of course, how do you think i speak with Dokic and Jankovic.
Greatest champion Yugoslavia ever had. Thank you Monica.

yes she is just ask Goran

"Hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated" - George Bernard Shaw

"And for the best of the teen-agers who followed her, and who occasionally referred to her as over the hill, Graf had a ready answer: against top-ranked Martina Hingis, Graf wound up 7-2. Graf's stirring 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 throttling of Hingis at the French Open final this June was perhaps the most emphatic parting shot the game has ever seen. "

Given that I'm English and thus not Serbian or American it doesn't really bother me which under nationality Monica plays, but I just wanted to add to the general conversation that I always still think of Monica as being Serbian and European, even though I know she has American citizenship and plays for America.... in the same way, I associate Martina Navratilova with the Czech Republic, even though I am aware she is American and loves being American, when I think of her my mind automatically thinks of the Czech Republic.

No I don't agree. Had Monica really liked Serbia she would not have requested in early 90's that she does not represent that country (ex. that they don't play their anthem, show their flag, announce Monica as a Yugoslavian player, etc.) even before she got American citizenship. I am sure that Monica still has many good friends there - her childhood was there, but I don't think that she likes Serbia as a country. Beside, didn't Serbians prosecute Hungarians living in Vojvodina at one time and Monica's nationality is Hungarian?

well im positive monica speaks hungarian... unless she lied in a full length interview with tennis magazine. she said thats what she speaks with her mom and brother.

i dont really have an answer for this thread. im really uninformed. but being in the us, im glad she plays for us. thats all i say. i liked her before she was american though. so i doubt much would be different.

i also find it funny monica didnt know jelena speaks english... or thats not a real quote.
